These are the first UHD Blu-ray titles from Sony Pictures

11 Nov 2015 | Rasmus Larsen |

Sony Pictures has announced its first movie releases to come out on Ultra HD Blu-ray in “early 2016”. The box art for one of the first UHD Blu-ray discs has also been revealed.

Six titles including Spider-Man 2

The movies will feature 4K resolution and HDR (high dynamic range), and be available to buy in “early 2016” instead of late 2015 as some had hoped. Some of the movies will also offer object-based audio such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.

Sony’s first Ultra HD Blu-ray releases include:
  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2
  • Salt
  • Hancock
  • Chappie
  • Pineapple Express
  • The Smurfs 2

    - "Ten years ago this month, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment authored the world's first feature film on Blu-ray Disc, and we continue to bring consumers the most innovative, immersive home entertainment experiences available," said SPHE president, Man Jit Singh.

The cover art for Hancock has also been unveiled. This is the official Ultra HD Blu-ray logo that you should look for in stores and online. Notice how it also says “HDR” at the bottom. The HDR label likely also covers an expanded color gamut to DCI-P3. UHD Blu-ray discs are region-free.

The first six titles will be followed new release titles and TV content, says Sony. The company points out that it already has an extensive library of 4K content, including Fury, Captain Phillips, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Men In Black, Ghostbusters, The Fifth Element, Bad Boys, The Da Vinci Code, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Leon: The Professional, Lawrence Of Arabia, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Guns of Navarone, Taxi Driver, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and many others.

20th Century Fox has also announced its first releases for UHD Blu-ray (1, 2). Sony Pictures, Warner, 20th Century Fox and Disney have announced its first Dolby Vision titles.

Sony has yet to announce a UHD Blu-ray player but we are guessing that it will be available around the same time. We should know more by CES 2016 time. Learn more about the new UHD Blu-ray format here.
