I'm glad to announce our first meeting in the new year, which will be held, as usual, on the second Wednesday of the month, January 12, at 7pm.

This time we have a talk by Eugene Kirpichov from St.Petersburg, Russia, who is visiting the Bay Area. Eugene is a very active member of Russian functional programming community, you also could have come across his posts in Haskell-Cafe mailing list.

A tentative plan is to have Eugene talk about two excellent tools that he wrote in Haskell, Timeplot and Splot, and his experiences using them in some real projects. (Spoiler: you can see his presentation about these tools here, but I strongly urge you to come to the meeting and hear him talk about the tools). There are other interesting topics that Eugene can talk about, so if time permits we may also have discussions on the topics of his choosing (possible topics: making use of functional programming experience in imperative languages, advanced funtional data-structures).

The meeting place is our usual place in SOMA, kindly provided by Engine Yard (Larry, please confirm):

500 Third Street, Suite 510
San Francisco, CA 94107

Contact phone (mine): 650-762-6644
Host's phone (Larry's): 407-718-7665.

Please arrive a little bit earlier, so that we could start at 7pm sharp.

Some people will be going from the South Bay (and probably East Bay) to the meeting and back, so there's a possibility of carpooling. Also, it's very easy to get to Engine Yard from the Caltrain station. Please send me a message if you need help figuring out transportation. If you can take some people from East/South Bay on your car to the meeting and back, please send a message to the baha...@googlegroups.com mailing list.

Please retweet/post to reddit/forward this email to those who may be interested in attending. If you plan to attend, and you're not yet subscribed, please subscribe to BAHaskell Google Group to follow all the discussions related to this meeting (if you have troubles with the captcha while joining, please send me a direct email).

Best regards,
Ivan

Vlad,

Aren't you presenting at ACCU that same evening (I noticed that accidentally today)?

Wow, that's pretty cool. From Russia with love, eh? :-D :-D I guess
we'll work out the carpooling on IM.

We have to figure out.

Vlad, where is your ACCU talk going to be at?

ACCU's usually at Symantec in Mtn View, right? What were you going to
present, Vlad? Is this something we haven't seen yet at a BACAT?

I probably talked about it at Bacat already - it's about monads and Kleisli, expressing stuff in Scala.

As a small homework, I suggest everybody to think about the projects which could be worked on during the oncoming SF Bay Area Haskell Hackathon. Even if you are not planning to participate in the Hackathon, your ideas could inspire someone to do something useful, so bring your ideas to the HUG meeting where we can discuss them (before and after Eugene's talk).

Ivan

Hi everyone,

Ivan - thanks for announcing! I was going to announce myself, but
suddenly I left for vacation :)

Perhaps I'll also say something about "ire" http://github.com/jkff/ire
, a pet project of mine - an incremental regular expression engine
based on Dan Piponi's ideas from
http://blog.sigfpe.com/2009/01/fast-incremental-regular-expression.html
. Although it's not in Haskell (it's in Java), I still think that
discussing this stuff with bahaskell will be very useful for me and, I
hope, also interesting for bahaskell :)

I'd like to join a car pool up from the peninsula.

I can also drive if we need an additional driver.

I'll be coming Wednesday. I can talk a bit about the hackathon, if people want.

I'm getting to SF on my own steam (well, okay, on Google's steam), but will be heading back down the Peninsula (Mtn. View) after either via CalTrain, or a ride if available.

I got room for one more, if you're willing to BART down to Daly City
with Zaki and I. I'll be driving out from there.

Kinda unrelated, but if anyone is between jobs and also wants to see
the Japanese prints at the Asian Art museum on that same day, let me
know.
