SWINDON middleweight Kelvin Young returned to winning ways with a polished points win over Tommy Marshall on Keith Mayo’s Championship Promotion at the Torquay Riviera Centre on Saturday night, writes PETER FOLEY.

And it was a mature performance that proved the former Penhill fighter has totally erased his surprise loss to Paul Brown at the Oasis in April from his memory.

Young said: “The victory was all that mattered to me – it was not a time for heroics or any fancy stuff, just making certain I was back on the winning trail.”

That approach was evident from the start of the six-round encounter as the 23-year-old Swindonian set about his task.

Young used the slight height and reach advantage he had to get behind the jab and launch neat right hands to claim the opening session.

The same approach kept Marshall at bay to add the second round to his tally before the pair started to trade at close quarters in the following session.

But Young maintained a resolute guard to prevent his Bridgwater rival from connecting with any decisive shots.

Marshall wobbled from a three-hook combination, but the Swindon fighter resisted the temptation to follow up and expose himself on the counter.

The Bridgwater man’s best work came towards the end, but Young took everything he had to offer in his stride to emerge with a decisive 59-56 victory from referee Grant Wallis.

Young added: “Tommy is much more experienced than me so this was a really important win.

“The result was probably more important psychologically than the manner in which it was achieved, but it is an important stepping stone for my career.”

In the main event, High Wycombe’s Mark McCullough was crowned the new British Masters lightweight champion after an epic 10-round points win over Bridgwater rival Dean Mills.
