About This Tide Chart

The above chart shows the high and low tide times at .

What Are The Cycles of Tides?

Because the Earth rotates through two tidal “bulges” every lunar day, coastal areas experience two high and two low tides every 24 hours and 50 minutes. High tides occur 12 hours and 25 minutes apart. It takes six hours and 12.5 minutes for the water at the shore to go from high to low, or from low to high.

Why Are There Dashes During Some Tide Periods?

Since two complete tide cycles are slightly longer than a day, during some days of the month only one high or one low tide will occur during a day.

What Causes Tides?

Most people are familiar with the tides – the daily rise and fall of the ocean’s water level. But what causes tides?

Two Types of Tides

There are actually two types of tides: spring tides and neap tides. Spring tides occur when the sun, moon, and Earth are aligned. This alignment creates a greater gravitational pull, resulting in higher tides. Neap tides happen when the sun and moon are at right angles to each other in relation to Earth. This position weakens the gravitational pull, causing lower tides.

What Creates Tides?

Tides are created by the gravitational force of the moon on the Earth’s oceans. The moon’s gravity pulls on the water in the oceans, causing it to bulge out in the direction of the moon. At the same time, the Earth’s gravity pulls on the water, trying to keep it in place. This tug-of-war between the two forces creates tides.

High and Low Tides

The tides are highest during a full or new moon because that’s when the sun, moon, and Earth are aligned. The tides are lowest during a quarter moon because that’s when the sun and moon are at right angles to each other.

Effects of Tides on Life on Earth

Ocean tides play an important role in marine life. Many animals use tides to help them migrate or find food. For example, some fish lay their eggs in tide pools where they will be safe from predators. Other animals, such as crabs and lobsters, use tides to help them travel from one place to another.

Tides also play a role in human activities such as fishing, boating, and surfing. Tides can be dangerous if they are not respected. Every year, there are reports of people being swept out to sea by large waves or strong currents. That’s why it’s important to check the tides on WeatherForYou.com and be aware of the tides before you go swimming or participate in any water activities.
