Westbrook police shut down a section of Route 302 on Wednesday night after receiving “a report of a male armed with a rifle who was out of control.”

Capt. Sean Lally said an investigation revealed the call was a hoax and there was never a threat to the public.

“We have identified a suspect, who has mental health issues, and we are working to provide that person with mental health support services,” Lally said in a press release.

Westbrook police will consult with the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether the person will be prosecuted.

Lally said police shut down the 300 block section of Route 302, known in Westbrook as Bridgton Road, around 7:50 p.m.
