A Forensic Computer Analyst has a certain ring to it, don’t you think.

Do you see yourself as a bit of an investigator? Do you think you could fight cybercrime?  Cybercrime is the world’s most serious criminal threat, people are needed to fight the war in cyberspace. If you ever wanted a career in IT with a bit of adventure then this could be your dream job.

Just like a private investigator you too could be working completely odd hours, at completely odd locations and probably working completely solo, all with the satisfaction that you’re protecting the public!

As a forensic computer analyst you are investigating all the digital media that could’ve been used in any criminal activity.

Examples

The types of criminal activity could be:

  • Fraud
  • Identity theft
  • embezzlement
  • Downloading of illegal material

  • Examining Mobile phones ( A common one is to see if it had been used prior to a car crash)
  • Examining servers
  • Conducting examinations of digital evidence
  • Preparing evidence to be used in court

  • Digital forensics
  • Computer science
  • Security and forensics
  • A good understanding of all devices, networking protocols and software

You should be someone who’s a highly organised person, who’s naturally curious, someone who just keeps delving until they have the answer. You’d be someone who some people would  use the saying “you’re like a dog with a bone, you never let go” to describe you. The evidence you log could send someone to prison or exonerate them so it’s imperative that your findings are recorded meticulously, you must also be able to orally present confidently because on numerous occasions you’ll be required to present your findings in court.

This is a growing role and much needed by many companies now. As we head into the future good forensic computer analysts will be in demand.
