Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur: No one cause for red zone struggles

PHILADELPHIA — Besides a relative inability to run the football through the first six games of the season, the biggest concern for the Eagles offense has been a lack of production in the red-zone.

Entering Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals, the Eagles own the worst red zone offense in the NFL, scoring touchdowns on just 40 percent of their opportunities inside the 20-yard line.

In the last three games the Eagles have converted just 37.5 percent of their red-zone chances.

It would be easy to tie the team's ineffectiveness running the football to a lack of production as the field shortens, but that is a notion Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur disputes.

"A lot of it comes down to not one common theme," Shurmur said prior to Wednesday's practice at the Novacare Complex. "We like to run the ball in the red-zone. As you know. We like to try and stay balanced in terms of the way we're running or throwing it. We'll run or throw it on any down or distance.

"I think it just came down to us being sounder and executing better in those situations."

Against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4, which the Eagles dropped in a 26-21 loss, the game came down to the inability to score a touchdown from one-yard out late in the fourth quarter.

Turnovers also have played a factor. Two of Nick Foles' seven interceptions this season have been in the red-zone.

"Certainly, offensively we're just trying to score points and lots of them. That's certainly what we're trying to do. And of course more than our opponent on any given Sunday. When you get in the red-zone, it's very important we connect throwing the ball and when we run the ball we have to get it in there."

While the Eagles enter Week 7 with a 5-1 record, the fact that the offense has been stymied inside the 20-yard line is certainly a concern to keep an eye on. Especially as the games take on a larger magnitude in coming weeks against playoff caliber opponents.
