Barnard College Construction Update - Jan. 13,  2016

Dear Neighbor,

Whew! We’re in the home stretch of completing several projects this week before our students return next week.   We weren’t scheduled to send an email update to you this week, but we’ve had a couple of changes and additions to our schedule, and we wanted to make certain to communicate these to you.

Two-Week Look Ahead – Jan 13 – 27

  • Due to the construction of the north-south walkway, the middle third of campus remains closed through next Monday. The Barnard entrances on Claremont Avenue and Broadway at 119th Street remain open as usual, and will continue to be your access points this week for walking through the College.

  • On Thursday, you may notice some additional noise as we remove three trees that lie within the footprint of the new construction site: two trees on the Lehman Lawn and one located between Lehman Hall and the Barnard Annex.

  • Next Tuesday, we’ll begin the process of demolishing Lehman Hall. The first phase is the removal of hazardous materials from the building, a process that will take 4-6 weeks. The removal of hazardous materials including asbestos is a common occurrence in most every pre-1970s building that is renovated or demolished in New York City. The process of removing these materials is heavily regulated and monitored by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Environmental Compliance.

  • For the first few weeks, all of the abatement work will be done inside Lehman Hall and all windows will be sealed to contain dust. This work, which will be done from 7 a.m. – 10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, should have little impact on the community since it isn’t a noisy process and all of the work will be done inside the building.  We’ll provide an update once the abatement work moves to areas outside of the building, but this will not occur until after we’ve secured the entire site, including building the construction fence along Claremont.

  • Next week we’ll start bringing in materials to build the construction fence along Claremont Avenue. The 12-foot-tall fence, 4 feet taller than NYC standards require, will surround the entire construction perimeter for the duration of the project. The fence will be draped with sound-deadening blankets that will also help contain dust. In addition, once we begin demolition later in February, the scaffolding surrounding the site will include fine-mesh netting to further capture dust. This initial work along Claremont will last for several weeks.
