No Place in Heaven, his new album, future summer hit. As friendly as we remembered him , we can't get enough of Mika. Meeting with Mika Fémina: Why was it such a long wait for this fourth album ? Mika : I wanted a record that would be very stripped down and I wanted to be very happy with what I heard. I hope I win that bet. What's more, there were lots of changes in my life, as everything collapsed. My sister had a terrible accident, three years ago, and that was a huge shock for me. She's fine, everything's ok now. When I turned 30, I took decisions. I told myself, ok, it's time to be reactive: either I stay as I am and I isolate myself, I become sad and less creative , either I have fun. Actually , after three albums, I was growing up, but I had built around myself a Babel tower I was starting to develop a sort of rust , I was toughening up, as if I were losing candor, which is an essential quality. Fémina:How did you snap out of it ? Mika : I expressed myself. I decided to shake myself , to take risks , to put myself in danger, to write the songs I want, to say aloud what I think .I fought to rebuild what I had lost , and I was successful. So, I thew myself into the adventure , I started things getting involved into things that I was afraid of, such as saying yes to do a TV show in Italy with X Factor, then to The Voice in France on TF1, while daring to be myself. For the first time, I showed my personality a lot more. Today I really feel freer. The person I am in public is in harmony with the person I am in private. What I say , that's what I am. I like that because, when your life gets simpler, you can do much more complicated things. Fémina: Finally, The Voice was a therapy? Mika : Oh yes! Everyone thinks it's entertainment , but for real, it's a Mika therapy! To tell the truth, we are serious, but we take ourselves seriously. Singing psychology is fascinating. When someone starts singing, they unveil more than a stripteaser. Right now, The Voice 5 is not confirmed but, as far as I'm concerned , I have lots of fun doing it. I love it. Fémina:This album is a reflection of your personal change? Mika : Yes. Those fourteen songs represent me very well. My record has a devilish side in its eyes , this enfant terrible side. It's organic, and at the same time, very pop, but it's apart. In a way, it's almost a classical album. It's very melodic, I made the album, then , I spent six months erasing for the whole thing to be very pure. It had to stay joyful , cheerful, energetic , but timeless. It was the big challenge. Fémina:As the title says, then, there's no more room in heaven? Mika: Yes, it's full, and there is no more room for someone like me! I don't care. Leave me in the purgatory, that suits me. Fémina:You sing, L'amour fait ce qu'il veut (Love does what it wants). Do you really think so? Mika: Romantic, but I think that love is the essential thing. It's like blood in your body. I also believe that if you don't have a sense of humor, you never fall in love. Besides, in that song J'ai pas envie, I say that I'm against absolute romanticism. We all know one has to be cautious about flowers bouquets when someone offers them to you. It's suspect. If I want flowers, I buy some for myself! Fémina:You sing in English, but then why are there four titles in French? Mika: I've always loved France, I grew up in Paris, I was a little Parisian. In that album, I didn't want those songs in French to be bonus titles at the end because I wanted it to be a reflexion of my identity today. I speak French and it gets mixed with English, I am all of that. Fémina:All She Wants is a song about your mother …… Mika : Yes and I say that I think she would have wanted to have another son rather than me.When you write songs, reality and mythology get mixed together, it doesn't matter what it true or not. What matters is the message. One often deals with fantasy , I write about the person I would like to be and not about the man I am. Once in a while, I wonder if it wouldn't have been nicer for my mother to have a more convential boy. It's not obvious to accept a child who is a musician, who is everywhere, whose orientation is not what she had imagined when I was 1 year old. My song is about that. But I think it's got advantages as well. She can have fun, and live lots of experiences. Even is the message is a bit harsh, the song is extremely tender, the melody enters very fast into one's heart. My mother loved it. She is very proud of me and of all of us, all five or us. She did a great job! Fémina:Do you multiply projects? Mika: I have a feeling of urgency, it's essential for me to create. My work , that's me, that's my life. Sometimes I make people feel exhausted because I never stop, but I love what I do and I love challenge. Right now, I'm writing a book, a sort of absurd diary. It can make readers both cry and laugh. It will be released in Italy by Rizzoli in autumn and eventually in France. With my sister , we are collaborating with Swatch again and I even drew a character called Mumu who lives in a postapocalyptic urban jungle . I have also recorded an adaptation of my four albums with the OSM which might be out for Christmas. I am getting involved more with Enfants sans cancer association. With Peter Lindberg , we 'll make photos that will be published in all the press because I'm very moved by this cause. Fémina:To be on stage again , is it like a party? Mika: What you feel when the lights go out, when the show can start, is magical. I'm obsessed by this moment when one parts from reality. Giving this feeling to be transported to the public, that's my job. The show will be an experience, a trip. It will be different from the others, but during an hour and fourty minutes, you will not think about your life, it willl be very intense, with of course , all the songs that people want to hear.You have to expect a show with my signature: a festive side and all the full range of emotions. At my gigs, there are often people of all ages, from all backgrounds. I am very proud of that. That diversity, that's me. My public looks like me, with all my contradictions and all my mixes. Fémina:Who are you today? Mika: I am someone who accepts himself without asking anyone a permission, I feel like being open. What matters most is to be hungry, to feed oneself with everything. Fémina:In France people say: "When you're hungry, everything goes well", so you're doing well, aren't you? Mika: I totally agree and in that spirit, I'm totally Frenchie. If one doesn't want a good cheese or a good cassoulet with a delicious glass of wine, that means they have lost everything! CD No Place in Heaven, Barclay, to be released on June 15th. Est-ce la crise de la trentaine qui l'a poussé à enregistrer un album un peu rétro, enjoué, coloré, un peu plus à son image en fait ? Mika a répondu à RTL : "J'ai déjà vécu ma crise de la trentaine. Je l'ai défaite avec The Origin Of Love, le précédent album, qui était une grande rupture pour moi. C'était une rupture essentielle. À l'âge de 30 ans, j'ai fait une fête, un dîner dans les vignes, en Italie, dans un petit hôtel et sans musique. En toute simplicité avec mes amis et ma famille", a raconté le chanteur. "Tout d'un coup à la fin, mes amis disent que c'est l'heure de dormir. C'était le signe. Et lorsque je me suis levé de ma chaise, toute la vallée s'est explosée dans un feu d'artifice. C'était pour moi le moment où je me suis dit que j'allais maintenant m'amuser à ma propre manière : en toute simplicité et avec des moments absurdes."Mika est de retour avec quatorze nouveaux titres organiques, mélodiques, pops, épurés. Ils délaissent les arrangements électroniques très présents dans The Origin Of Love, paru il y a trois ans. On le retrouve derrière le piano. Les mélodies sont très soignées. Les textes candides mais terriblement attachants. Ceux qui ont aimé le Mika de Relax et Grace Kelly vont adorer ce nouvel album. Grâce à des titres comme No Place In Heaven."Il n'y a pas de place au paradis pour quelqu'un comme moi" chante Mika dans ce titre en forme de lettre à Dieu. Mika a grandi dans une famille croyante, a-t-il expliqué à RTL. "J'ai été éduqué musicalement par la musique religieuse. Je pourrai vous chanter toute une messe en latin", s'est amusé le chanteur. "Je voulais faire un album à Los Angeles pour créer quelque chose de collectif." Cet album est né à Los Angeles. Mika a fui le studio dans lequel il devait travailler. Il s'est enfermé dans le salon de sa maison de location avec un piano. "Il y avait Pharrell Williams, Max Martin et moi... Et je me suis dis mais qu'est-ce que je fais là ? J'avais loué complètement par hasard sur Internet une maison des années 50 dans les collines de Los Angeles. Je voulais faire un album là-bas pour créer quelque chose de collectif."Depuis son tube Elle me dit en 2012, Mika écrit et chante en français. Dans No Place In Heaven, il y a quatre chansons dans notre langue. On a l'impression que le musicien s'amuse et ose plus lorsqu'il chante en français. Une impression que Mika confirme. Des ballades et un hommage à Freddie Mercury Mika chante "Si c'est la fin du monde, faisons la fête" dans Last Party. Une chanson dédiée à Freddie Mercury, chanteur du groupe Queen. "J'ai découvert la musique de Queen un peu tard et pour moi c'était super car j'ai découvert que je pouvais adapter mes racines de la musique classique pour les mettre dans la musique pop ou rock". Dans ce disque, le chanteur nous propose cinq ballades. C'est beaucoup plus que dans ses précédents disques. Mais dans Last Party, par exemple, "la fin attaque", a expliqué le chanteur. "C'est comme la dernière fête dans le palais de Versailles. C'est du disco baroque. Les ballades ont toutes une couleur bien précise." "Nous sommes tous dans le caniveau, mais certains d'entre nous regardent les étoiles", reprend Mika, cette phrase célèbre d'Oscar Wilde dans ce titre touchant. Il cite aussi Jean Cocteau, Cole Porter, Arthur Rimbaud, James Dean ou David Bowie. Des icônes pour Mika, qui l'aident à garder la tête haute. Mika repart en tournée à la rentrée. Avec un passage au Zénith de Paris le 19 septembre et le 17 octobre. Il est aussi en train de voir comment garder son rôle de juré de The Voice.
