DorobekINSIDER Live: From the Frontlines of Innovation

Many people see government innovation as an oxymoron. Those inside government know it is possible, but government innovation can be complex. And the nature of that innovation is changing and evolving.

In 2012, the White House launched the Presidential Innovation Fellows. The goal was simple, bring in new talent to tackle problems in a new way. Already the program has been a huge success with more than 30 projects currently underway. One project, MY USA, is helping American businesses access government information and services that will help them grow, hire American workers, and export to foreign markets.

But it is not just the federal government that is looking at innovation. San Francisco set up the Mayor's Office of Civic Innovation. So far the Office has launched five projects including the Mayor's Innovation Roundtable Series which bring together startups and govies to talk and form partnerships.

In a recent DorobekINSIDER Live, innovation in 2014 was the main topic of discussion. The panle featured government experts including:

  • Lena Trudeau, Associate Commissioner, Office of Strategic Innovation, General Services Administration's Federal Acquisition Service. She also runs the Presidential Innovation Fellowship.

  • Jay Nath, Chief Innovation Officer, The City of San Francisco

  • Jeff Shen, Presidential Innovation Fellow
