This Handy Little Web App Helps You Visualize DOF Across Various Formats and Focal Lengths

When it comes to understanding how depth of field, focal length and other variables are affected by different film/sensor formats, it can get confusing. Fortunately, Reddit user redblue has created an incredibly useful interactive resource that will help you better visualize the factors at play by letting you change variables while swapping sensors sizes and seeing the effect in real time.

The web app is based on the equations from DOFMaster and puts into visuals the otherwise difficult math of figuring this all out for yourself. Right now, the design is fairly basic in structure, but the main functionality (aka. the important part) is there and actually kind of fun to play around with.

One of the main suggestions for improvement mentioned by several Reddit users is to make it so aperture can be adjusted by 1/3rd and 1/2 stop intervals rather than the infinite slider it has now, since you’re not going to be shooting at f/8.2 any time soon. Another is to add check boxes to more accurately display what format you’re working with.

Improvements pending, it’s a wonderful little resource that is definitely worth checking out. Head on over to the site here, play around with it a bit, and then let us know what you think in the comments down below.
