A British bus company is feeling the heat after a new ad campaign prompted social-media users to accuse the company of sexism. The ads—featuring nude men and women holding signs that read “Ride Me All Day for £3”—have since been pulled by the company.

New Adventure Travel, the company in question, was trying to promote a new bus route. A number of prominent individuals joined the online protest, including a member of parliament and the singer Charlotte Church.

“Firstly we have stated that our objectives have been to make catching the bus attractive to the younger generation,” the company said in a statement. “We therefore developed an internal advertising campaign featuring males and females to hold boards to promote the cost of our daily tickets.”

“The slogan of ‘ride me all day for £3’ whilst being a little tongue in cheek was in no way intended to cause offence to either men or women and, if the advert has done so then we apologise unreservedly,” the statement continued. “There has certainly been no intention to objectify either men or women. Given the volume of negativity received we have decided to remove the pictures from the back of the buses within the next 24 hours.”

The slogan—“Ride Me All Day”—quickly became a meme. Brits tied the ads to the U.K.’s recent election, plastering it on images of resigned Labour Party leader Ed Miliband and ousted M.P. Ed Balls.
