Pick Your Favourite 2015 ZOOM Winner!

A huge thank you to all of our Fan Club members who took the time to take and submit photos for our monthly ZOOM contests. From April to September we’ve received hundreds of great shots capturing memorable and unique moments in Canadian harness racing!

Congratulations again to our six monthly winners! Now it’s time to pick your favourite shot from the six ZOOM Winners. The deadline to vote is Friday, October 16 at 5:00 p.m. (est)

Here’s a recap of the winners:

April – Selfies Theme – William Chappell (Kayla) of Beaumont, Alberta with Pedal Steel.

William’s Mom, Kayla, helped him hold the phone while he snapped the shot. William is a fourth generation horseman from the Chappell side (Graham Chappell is his Great Grandpa, John Chappell his Grandpa and his Dad is Doug Chappell). Both his Mom and Dad train and drive and both sides of William’s family have been involved with the industry for years and hoping he follows suit.

May – Spring Fever Theme – Michelle Hogan of Millar Lake, Ontario captured a photo of Conrad Seelster enjoying a spring mud bath in his paddock on a rainy Bruce Peninsula day.

If Michelle’s name is familiar to you, you may have come across some of her artwork. Michelle’s pen and ink artwork has been featured in the Equine Jubilee Art Show in Delaware, Ohio, as well as the American Academy of Equine Art Fall Open exhibit in Georgetown, Kentucky.

June – At The Races Theme -Trish Dooling of Portugal Cove, Newfoundland captured this shot of Blueberry Tea at St. John’s Racing & Entertainment Centre on a Sunday morning as a local amusement fair was setting up.

Dooling is no stranger to the camera, with her photos featured in Trot 4 Kids, on the cover of Trot Magazine as well as the ‘Heart of Harness Racing’ calendar. Her passion for photography started thanks to her father, who wanted to see how the horses looked when training – now she can be found taking over 1,200 photos on any given race day.

July – Bring A Friend Theme - Tammy Webb of Fredericton, New Brunswick, took this photo of nine-year-old Jocelyn Reid at Fredericton Raceway during the Bring A Friend promotion on July 9.

Growing up, Tammy always had a love for horses and horseback riding. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that her close friend, Brent Briggs, introduced her to the world of harness racing.

“I’ve been hooked ever since!” she says. “He and his family have a long history with the industry and I had the pleasure of working with them and some wonderful horses. I started out with my Groom’s license and over the last year have become more involved by jogging and helping with the training of a couple of two-year-olds.”

August – Horsin Around - Tessa MacKinnon of Souris, Prince Edward Island, captured an image of Rowan Walker with Toons, an old quarter horse that Rowan loves to ride in Montague, PEI.

Tessa grew up on a beef farm and raced horses all her life. “My mother (Tanya) and grandfather own standardbreds so it’s in my blood! I own horses with my mom and my friend, Cindy MacDonald,” explained Tessa of her involvement in harness racing. Rowan is Cindy MacDonald’s grandson, and will soon be going into grade 4.”

September – Meet My Horse – Terri McLeod McNair, of Guelph, Ontario, for her image of her Dad, Roderick McLeod and his retired standardbred, 18 year old Jimsboy.

“I took my Dad up to see Jimsboy in Goderich this summer. When he was brought out to the paddock he walked right up to my Dad and that's the only picture I caught of that pair of old friends. Jimsboy is fortunate that he will always have a place to live out his life. He was the greatest horse to enter ours!”

Terri got involved in racing, right out of high school, and worked for Ken Hardy at Windsor Raceway. She has three children – Amy, Doug and Scott who are all active in racing.

The winner will receive a Grand Prize which will include a $50 gift card to the racetrack of their choice and an enlargement of their winning photo framed or plaque mounted!
