Marcus Mariota Trade Rumors: Eagles Reportedly Offered Multiple 1st-Round Picks

The Philadelphia Eagles and former head coach Chip Kelly reportedly made an aggressive push to land Marcus Mariota in the draft last year. 

During an appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd (h/t Liam Jenkins of Philly Sports Network), Fox Sports' Peter Schrager said the Eagles offered a first- and second-round pick in 2015, first-round pick in 2016 and any quarterback and defensive player on their roster to the Tennessee Titans for the No. 2 overall pick.  

There were rumblings before the draft that the Eagles might try to make a move up in an effort to reunite Kelly and Mariota, who knew each other well from their time at Oregon. 

Last April, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the Eagles made a similar offer to Tennessee in an effort to select Mariota:

Kelly insisted leading up to and after the draft, in which the Eagles took wide receiver Nelson Agholor with the No. 20 pick, that the price to move up 18 spots for Mariota was too great, per Andy Schwartz of CSNPhilly.com: "It was just a really steep price. It’s like driving into a nice neighborhood and looking at a house and saying, ‘That’s really nice,’ and then they tell you the price and you turn around and drive away. We didn’t walk in the front door. We didn’t take a look around."

It's interesting to look at how things played out in 2015 and how different they could have been if the Eagles had been successful in their pursuit of Mariota.

The Eagles had already traded for Sam Bradford earlier in the offseason, in addition to keeping Mark Sanchez. After winning 10 games in each of Kelly's first two seasons, the Eagles finished 7-9 in 2015 and fired the 52-year-old. Kelly was later hired to be the San Francisco 49ers head coach. 

Mariota had a successful rookie season with the Titans, throwing for 2,818 yards, running for 252 yards and scoring 22 total touchdowns. He did miss four games due to injuries, but his future looks bright in a Tennessee uniform. 

Meanwhile, the Eagles have a quarterback depth chart that includes Bradford and Chase Daniel. They did move up in the 2016 draft, getting the No. 8 overall pick in a trade with Miami that could be used to address the position.
