World Food Day - Blog Action Day - 2011

BlogJunta - An ode to the Blogosphere

Dear Friends,

I cordially welcome you to Few Miles! Today in association with BAD, I am writing about Food.

Firstly, what is BAD? BAD is Blog Action Day, an annual event that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day. Our aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion around an important issue that impacts us all.

Secondly, Why to write about FOOD? This year Blog Action Day coincides with World Food Day (16th October), a time that focuses the world’s attention on food, something we all have in common.

What is Food? According to Wiki, Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body. It is usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals.

What is World Food Day? World Food Day was established by FAO’s Member Countries in November 1979. The World Food Day theme for 2011 is "Food prices - from crisis to stability".

How important is Food?
Food is usually ingested by an organism (human or any) and assimilated by the body's cells in an effort to produce energy, maintain life, and to stimulate growth. A human being can survive up to 21 days of total starvation but it again depends on how healthy he/she is.

What is the reason for starvation?
The reason for starvation for Food could be either lack of rainwater, poor cultivation land, or it could be any. If it is because of nature then it is difficult to find a solution but if the reason is Government then what to do?

Flash News: “India Food Prices Edge Higher” “Onion, Petrol and Beer Costs Rs 70” “Food inflation rate goes high” “Tens of thousands of people have gathered in India's capital to protest surging food prices” “Onion prices goes high, 100/KG” and the story goes on...

Why this is happening only in developing countries like India? If the theme of this year’s World Food Day is to change from crisis to stability then it should be followed everywhere right? I wish it to be... because people who earn 100 Rs per day are starving for food and shelter.

What are the impacts of starvation?
A picture is worth a thousand words...” Here are few of the pictures that will show what reality is.

Tears? I had starved for food for many days in my childhood because my sweet family is richer than richest in love and affection but was poor in terms of monetary values. With God’s grace and our hard work made us, what we are today but it is not the same for all individuals in developing nations. So try to help the poor if not with money at least with Food.

On this note, I wish to share about Akshaya Patra, an initiative to enable hunger free education in India, and it serves 1.3 million Children in India. The birth of Akshaya Patra started with a story of compassion. Looking out of a window one day in Mayapur, a village near Calcutta, His Divine Grace A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada saw a group of children fighting with street dogs over scraps of food. From this simple, yet heart breaking incident, came the determination that: No one within a ten-mile radius of our center should go hungry and it bloomed to “No child in India should be go hungry” and it is successful as it already serving 1.3 million children in India. For more info visit www.akshayapatra.org.

Here is an acrostic about Food ~

F – Food has to be donated
O – Only if it is worth eating
O – Old, rotten foodstuffs may
D – Destroy the hope of little flowers

Save little flowers because they are the future of the world.

There is so much to say about food but it cannot be said in a single post so my dear readers read all the posts participating in Blog Action Day to help us to fight for the theme. Also, share this post to spread the word... Will you?

Take a quiz now which is mandatory and please think about the last question. Do make a change by supporting us with your mail. Vande Mataram

  1. Its a thoughtful post SIS. In many places in India, Food is treated as God or equivalent of God.

And yes its high time we share food with the poor instead of wasting it.!!

  6. I am grateful for your visit.

We both talked about the same thing: famine.
You felt hungry in your childhood.
My family was not rich, but we had a good table.
Only many years after I met the reality in Brazil, thousands of people live in poverty and starving.
When I studied in the citytown, all night I saw a horrible scene: people picking up the trash debris spoiled food left there by restaurants.

I do not blame rich countries for the failure of the poorest, because at some point they erred, they failed to react. Cos these poor nations never left for effective action.

  8. Wonderful post!

It's so sad to see children going hungry all the time. And the way they look in to shops hoping and longing for a bite..

    Great post!

  9. With the all so called 'progress' we are not able to provide food for all. Let people like us decide not to waste food and instead of feeding friends and relatives on auspicious occasions we should support feeding the hungry - though one feeding does not help .. it is at least one lesser hungry soul at the given time.
