People Editorial Guidelines Published on September 6, 2016 12:40PM EDT Photo: Source: Marcus Kowal/Instagram The 15-month-old son of MMA fighter and commentator Marcus Kowal has been taken off life support after being struck in his stroller by an alleged drunk driver over the weekend. “About an hour ago, our baby was declared brain dead,” Kowal wrote Sunday on Facebook of his son, Liam. “He tried to fight so hard. He even died at one point but they brought him back. He’s a little fighter. Our hearts are broken and there’s a void in my soul but we will get through this … RIP Liam Mikael Kowal.” According to Hawthorne, California, police, on Saturday afternoon a car smashed into the toddler and a 15-year-old girl, who is the baby’s aunt according to a GoFundMe page for the family. The two victims were found in the street near the crosswalk. Police allege the driver of the vehicle, 72-year-old Donna Marie Higgins, attempted to flee the scene. However, witnesses were able to follow her and prevent her from allegedly leaving until police arrived. After performing a field sobriety test, police determined that Higgins was allegedly driving under the influence, according to the news release. She was arrested under the charges of felony hit-and-run and felony drunk driving. Kowal announced in a Facebook post that he and Liam’s mother, Mishel Eder, decided to donate the young boy’s organs “so that his little heart can make another child live and another set of parents not have to go through what we have to.” “It hurts to write this but Liam loved to share and the person we were going to raise him to be would love to help someone else,” Kowal wrote. “So anyone we know, or someone you know, inbox me please.” According to his website, Kowal began training in karate and Aikido as a teenager and won the K2 World Title in kickboxing in 2002. He made his professional MMA debut in 2009. In an update, police said Higgins was released after posting bail, which was set at $100,000. Information on Higgins’ court dates and attorney were not immediately available.
