Katniss and crew hit the $500M bullseye at the global box office last night, taking a total of $504.8M worldwide. Domestic grosses for Lionsgate‘s Mockingjay Part 1 are now estimated at $233.8M with international coming in at $271M. The penultimate installment of the Hunger Games franchise passed $500M after 13 days compared to the 10 days it took Catching Fire to get there in 2013. Catching Fire had released in China in those first 10 days, whereas Mockingjay won’t head to the Middle Kingdom until 2015.
Mockingjay has been the top movie at the North American and overseas box office for two weeks in a row. With the majors taking a break from wide releases on the upcoming (and traditionally slow) weekend, Mockingjay is expected to maintain the No. 1 crown domestically with an estimated $20M. The same could go for international where the film is still playing well in offshore markets. As is Interstellar which is in its last frame in China (where John Woo’s The Crossing just bowed) and is going gangbusters in Korea. Korea this frame welcomes Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods And Kings as do Mexico, Australia, Argentina and Spain a week before the debut of The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies. Otherwise there are no major overseas openers this frame as Penguins Of Madagascar expands into the UK and that market’s family film, Paddington, travels to France, Germany, Japan and Brazil.
