A solar powered plane landed in New York after a six-leg journey across the US.

The Solar Impulse, which was flown by two Swiss pilots, is as wide as Boeing 747 but weighs little more than a family car. It took off from San Francisco in May, powered by more than 11,000 solar cells and batteries which charge during the day and allow the plane to continue flying at night.

Bertrand Piccard, 55, a Swiss psychiatrist and one of the pilots, said: “The coast to coast flight has always been the goal of the pioneers of flight since the Wright Brothers.

“Now we are starting a new cycle in the history of aviation, flying with no fuel at all.”
