K. K. Watson is an Independent Author who grew up, and currently resides in Central Florida. Her family consists of a loving husband, two spoiled dogs, and a sweet kitten, facing an identity crisis.

During the day, K. K. works a technical position in the Environmental Sciences field. She fell in love with the Paranormal/Urban fantasy genre, and as a creative outlet, she tried her hand at writing. The end result is The Dark Races Series. The two-book series is evolving, with a third in progress, and several more on the horizon.

K. K. loves the beach, specifically the west coast of Florida, and seems to find endless inspiration while she is there. So much so, that Tempting Fate is based in Venice Florida. The very real town seems to have a vast fictional, supernatural population. She sizes up everyone that she meets, and everyone is fair game, possibly morphing into a new character, with special powers and attributes, and if you ruffle her feathers, you may find yourself dead. Literary speaking, of course.

In her spare time, K. K. likes to read Chick-lit, edgy Paranormal Romances, and Urban Fantasy. Like her choice in reading, K. K. likes to write edgy stories that are sexy, dark, and suspenseful, with lots of twists and turns, strong heroines and overbearing alpha-males. Eliciting a wide range of emotions in an entertaining way is her goal.

Tempting Fate, is a fantasy novel by American author K K Watson. The cover design is dramatic and will catch the attention of the casual reader with the regal figure standing centrally among the elements of air, earth, fire and water.

It is written in the first person and we see all the action through the eyes of Elena, a twenty-something who hitherto believed herself to be human. We are treated to a mix of sorcery, romance, telepathy, danger, intrigue, jealousy and loss. Watson blends the everyday with the outlandish giving us contrasts between the mundane and the macabre as our heroin moves almost effortlessly between the world she has known during her formative years and Annwyn, the planet where she will one day be queen.

I appreciated a bit of preamble and backstory before being thrust into the action as the author made me care about Elena before anything too dramatic happened to her. She is ably assisted throughout the book by her main foils; Aiden, Greg and Sean and it seems that supernatural males suffer from the same testosterone-filled competitiveness as their human counterparts.

Structurally, there is rather a lot of dialogue and is arguably a bit on the long side. With regard content, if you’re offended by graphic material, there are a few sex scenes but these make up a very small percentage of the book. Whilst I’m not an advocate of too much detail, if it has relevance to the dynamics between the characters, as in this case, I’m fairly ambivalent.

This book has been nicely written with a strong ending so if you enjoy stories of demons, vampires and witches running amok, give ‘Tempting Fate’ a try. Having reviewed several novels in this genre recently, it is a competent example of this tried and tested formula.

There were many aspects I enjoyed but I kept hoping for an injection wow-factor that would elevate it above the crowd. This didn’t quite happen for me but I note that this is the first in a series so I’m hopeful that the sequel will build on the momentum of this book and fulfil the potential that I feel this author undoubtedly possesses.

I award Tempting Fate three-and-a-half stars.

Each climactic moment in this novel was a gem, smoldering romance, dialogue was fluid, a very intriguing plot with a variety of characters and great world-building that has an epic feel worthy of giving the second book a read.

Tempting Fate by K. K. Watson

Tempting Fate is a compellingly unique story and has good pacing. The characters are varied and well developed. I wanted to add coming-of-age to the genre listing, but that doesn’t quite fit. Elena is twenty-five years old, but has just learned her heritage as a Fae. She was raised as a human and shielded by protective magic to hide her from the magical realms. She has a lot of catching up to do as she learns about her newly budding powers. Her strong personality comes across as an entitled bratty child. There were several times I rolled my eyes or wanted to slap her. I had to remind myself Elena is out of her element and floundering to find out how she fits in.

With the help of her new demon friend, Amber, she is introduced to vampires, witches, and an oracle. Amber is a wonderful character who provides Elena a sounding board. She is knowledgeable about the ways of the magical realm, witty, and lots of fun. Aiden of Avalon, the last druid, is charged with Elena’s protection concerning a prophecy that will unite the Realms of the dark and light Fae. Elena has the weight of the world on her shoulders while trying to learn about this new world she has been thrown into.

Tempting Fate is told through Elena’s eyes so we are allowed her personal insights and struggles to come to grips with her new life. This seems to be Ms. Watson’s debut novel, which I found to be not quite ready for prime time. I would have enjoyed this book so much more if I hadn’t had to wade through the freshman editing errors/mistakes. Beside the commonly found errors of missing, extra, or wrong words and punctuation, I found Elena’s mother’s recounting of her past full of inconsistencies. Another problem I encountered was repetition; while there is a lot going on, I think there are certain aspects of the story that stick with the reader and we don’t need a rehash to follow the story-line. With the help of a good editor these problems could be ironed out to make a more focused, cohesive story. This novel is well worth the investment to add a final polish.

FYI: Adult sexual situations and language. If you are sensitive to F-bombs, I have to warn you there are several. **Originally written for "BigAl’s Books and Pals" book blog. May have received a free review copy.** September 5, 2016

Format/Typo Issues: Sadly this book, as it stands, is riddled with issues that range from proofing errors to problems with story consistency.

What a great adventure! This book had me hooked from the beginning. It starts out with the allure of a mystery and as the reader I couldn't wait to read more. I love the surprises it kept throwing my way. As the story unfolds the reader is taken on the adventure with the main character Elena Kelley. Her whole life is not the life she thinks it is. She isn't a normal human. Turns out she is next in line for the Light Fae crown and she is supposed to unite the Dark Races. But that's easier said than done. This book has it all: adventure, romance (hot steamy scenes), humor, mystery and the fact that it's a great story. I can't wait to read more in this series. I highly recommend this to all paranormal adventure fans.

Powerful!

This was a powerful start to the paranormal series! I absolutely loved the amazing storyline. Each and every chapter was unique!
I want to be able to mirror jump! When Elena starts uncovering her powers, it is revealed early on she will be really powerful.
Her and Aiden are destined to be one powerful couple. He takes her breath away every time he enters a room.

Full Review at: What's Beyond Forks?

My goodness, this was hard to put down. There was always something happening. Action, humor, romance. It had it all. The story is told from Elena's point of view, and I got mad at her quite bit, but her spunk and attitude almost made it all forgivable. She's got personality.

I think Aiden may be a new book boyfriend for me. He screams Alpha. It seriously seeps off the pages. He really came alive and had a presence too. I could feel it through the words as I read. I even felt like I knew what his voice would sound like. It was crazy, but oh so good. This guy sure knows how to make a girl swoon, and major kudos to the author for bringing all that out in her character.

The story in general, was excellent and original. There are different types of fae as well as other supernaturals. K.K. Watson put her own unique spin on these creatures which made them stand apart from other characters within this genre, making it even more enjoyable. Tempting Fate is the ultimate escape. It took me right into Elena's world, and I didn't want to leave. I'm super excited about this series!

Fascinated from the start, Tempting Fate emerged me into an enchanting world that ranged wonderfully in diverse and highly descriptive locations and characters! Well-written along with well-developed characters, the story had it all; passion, magic, love, lust, and good versus evil battles. It had kept me on edge and wanting more! Tempting Fate was a story you could really become captivated in,and with Fairies, demons, witches, vampires- the author did a great job at creating a refreshing story that combines them all! It was truly an original and I loved it! Highly recommend if you love The Shannara Chronicles by Terry Brooks.
