WHAT TO EXPECT: This leadership program is focused on teaching civic engagement skills to equip the students with the tools to be life-long engaged community members. Our curricula was developed by a graduate of the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government as well as the Mi Familia Vota - Houston staff..
We are looking for high school students who are interested in learning more about the issues that affect their community, and what they can do to empower themselves and others to do something about them. A very large part of the fellowship is taking part in hands-on experiences out in the community. These experiences, by design, will challenge fellows’ comfort zones, which is a part of growing and gaining new skills including increased self confidence and heightened auto-efficacy. Past fellows have spoken in front of a rally at City Hall, many fellows have been featured in news pieces by local and international media and one fellow was invited to meet the President inside the Oval Office at the White House.
The Emerging Latino Leaders Fellowship will begin with a three-day training session from January 20-22 (location TBA) where fellows will learn to share their stories, about the issues that affect their community, and what they can do to empower themselves and others to do something about them. After this training, we will focus on putting our newly acquired skills to work as we empower others in our community to get involved.
Key Dates:
3 Day training: January 20-22
Last Session: May 23-24
Graduation: Week of May 22
We are a non-partisan program and welcome people with different perspectives, to add to our rich, respectful dialogue.
