Cardiff Hops is a connected group of people who grow hops in and around the city in pots (50L), in the garden, allotment or in public space and together help local Micro brewer PIPES create a unique Cardiff Beer. These Hops are mapped online. We grow these hops which are perennial and expand and grow each year from March to September. They only grow up to 2.5-3m in height. They climb up twine, rope, fences, trees, trellis. In July/August these hops form flowers and 6 weeks afterwards form mature hop cones. Normally around Second week in September they are ready to harvest.
Cardiff Hops choose a weekend date to Harvest their hops individually or as a group take them to central meeting place for cleaning, recording and weighing. These hops are then passed to the Brewer and used to flavour the beer.
We only have 48 hour window from picking to getting them in the beer to create a Green hop ale/ seasonal beer. Each year the brewer makes the green hop ale with our hops called the Taff Temptress.

This will be available October- November. We first get a call when the barrels are ready and then when the bottles are ready. We get first dibs to purchase bottles.
Both on tap and by bottle we get a large discount on the beer. Each year we pay only £2 a pint for the Taff Temptress and £2 - £2.5 per labelled bottle (prices negotiated each year and may vary dependent on market changes).

The group can meet up and communicate through Facebook and some have been on hop farm trips, beer festivals, some are members of CAMRA some visit the brewer on Bar nights. You are as active or passive as you wish.

If you wish to use your hops in your own brewing that is fine, we just ask you to share your spare and maybe share a sample of your beer for brewing competition!!! If you wish to use your hops for craft or decoration that is not a problem just share your spare.

If you plant fails to crop or you are away don't despair you are still apart of the group and can come down and enjoy the beer when ready at discount as the bar have a list of growers. If your plant dies you can buy a replacement at a cheaper price.

Our pioneering Brewer is PIPES when we started Simon was the only local microbrewery based and brewing in Cardiff.

We are trying to join a producers group with British Hops Association so that we can be authorised growers of other dwarf hop varieties with the hope of developing a Welsh hop industry.

If we take on new hop varieties and increase growers and hop rhizomes to a certain size we will look at other additional brewing requirements to ensure no hops are wasted.
