All students are welcome to attend Tuesday evening, but attendance is not required. Students who do attend on Tuesday evening should attend with their parents. Students will visit the exhibits with their classroom teacher on Wednesday, March 1st from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Parents are welcome to join. Please do consider volunteering for a shift.

This is an opportunity for our children to experience scientific investigation in a noncompetitive, non-threatening environment. The science fair is an extracurricular activity and the work is meant to be done outside of classroom time. Participation is optional, but this is a fun event and we hope your child will choose to get involved. Children of all ages can participate at whatever level they are capable. If your child chooses to participate, here are some things you can do to support them:

• Spend some time brainstorming. Think of a science-related topic in which your child is interested

• Good ideas can come from anywhere. Look around the house

• Your child’s teacher is a good resource

• Science books are available in the library

• Help your child choose a topic that is age appropriate

• Remind your child not to put the project off until the last minute

The level of parent involvement is completely up to you. Some parents and students really enjoy working together on these projects, others like their children to work more independently. There is value to both styles. Please remember to keep projects small enough to fit on a student’s desk so there is room for everyone to exhibit their work.

The next page has an explanation of the scientific process and some hints for choosing a topic.
Look them over…and happy experimenting!
