Creative Placemaking Bootcamp

Join us as we take it to the streets. We're going to leave the conference room behind and get down and dirty in Milwaukee. We'll build pallet furniture, decorate the streets and sidewalks, and install guerrilla way-finding. The National Endowment for the Arts in their "Beyond the Building" convening in 2014 identified national conferences for their potential to make creative placemaking contributions to host communities. During the National Main Streets Conference we'll turn their call to action in to a reality by working with local venues and creative placemakers in Milwaukee. We'll partner with NEWaukee, a placemaking organization with a venue blocks away from the conference hall and the Greater Milwaukee Association of REALTORS®, who is helping to fund the project. This hands-on workshop will give you first-hand experience, tactics, and tools that you can use in your own community, while leaving behind a special gift to our host city of Milwaukee.

Pick One Role from the List Below

Coordinators. Sign in participants and help to match with specific projects/tasks. Make sure things look nice during the event (including trash pickup and managing recycling. Break down once the event is over and make sure all tools or shared items get returned. casual nice clothes and comfortable, closed toe shoes.

Researchers. In the lead-up to the event we'll need help better understanding the area we're working in. We’ll ask you to cull through old plans, proposals, site history for the park and surrounding area to give us a better understanding of the area we are working in.

Mouthpieces. Are you good at talking with the public or members of the press? We need people who can explain what is going on as it is happening. Being friendly! Having fun!

Hunter Gatherers. Find and stockpile materials we need for the event. We're especially looking for people with vans and pick-up trucks who are unafraid to handle heavy objects. Shipping pallets, heavy lumber, and gardening and landscaping materials are just a few of the things we will need. ld clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting dirty or painted

Makers. Build and paint chairs, tables, and other design features. Wear old clothes and closed toe shoes.

Photographers. Bring your own equipment take high resolution (300 dpi+) photos. Volunteers should have the resources to provide us with all video footage in *.jpg or *.gif format by the Monday after the event.

Videographers. Bring your own equipment to take high definition video with quality audio (we’d prefer if you had a microphone with a 48 Hz frequency response or higher). Volunteer footage that would work best for me would need to shot in Canon Dslr 1080 24p or 720 60p in cinestyle color profile using a tripod or other stabilizing support system.
