WLSA Effective Communications Workshop Registration
Please join us on Thursday, February 7th for an evening workshop for hands-on experience and feedback on effective communication. We will have dinner and an introductory session starting at 5 PM, followed by three different breakout sections - but you can choose which one(s) you'd like to attend! Registration is on a first-come first-serve basis, and we will send confirmation details and waitlist information to all participants. And please join us at lunch in 3041 for a larger conversation on these topics at the Communications Panel.

*Participation in each session is optional! Register below only for the sessions you want to attend!*

Dinner and Opening Workshop:

Join us for dinner as we cover some of the basics of effective communication for women in the legal field. This session will be led by Ellen Hemphill, a Professor in Duke’s Department of Theater Studies. She is also the director of Archipelago Theatre/CINE Inc., and director of Cardea Consulting. As a creative communications consultant, Professor Hemphill has lead similar workshops at Fuqua, Sanford, and the medical school.

Breakout Sessions:

The Effective Communication for Women Workshop will allow participants to practice general (gendered) challenges to effective communication and public speaking (anything from upspeak, to stance, to confidence, to handshakes). This will be led by Professor Hemphill.

The Persuasion & Advocacy Workshop will allow participants to learn to master the art of persuasion and client advocacy from the female perspective. This will be led by Professors Jane Wettach and Daisy Lovelace. Professor Wettach, who directs the Children’s Law Clinic and teaches education law, has had a successful career in advocating for poverty and education and has argued cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and the NC Supreme Court. Professor Lovelace is a lecturing fellow at the law school and visiting scholar at Fuqua. She teaches communication and leadership courses and is a corporate consultant and executive coach.

The Negotiation Workshop will be geared toward women who have varying career interests to practice negotiating from the female perspective. This will be led by Professors Casey Thomson and Frances Mock. Professors Thomson and Mock have had successful careers advocating for clients and currently teach Negotiation at the law school.
