DIGITAL [LEGO] ANALOG: spring
DIGITAL [ LEGO ] ANALOG LEARNING- Phase II Studio
Research Studio Questionnaire
Spring 2015||

Course Description:

As artists and designers, where do we draw the line between real and augmented experience?

As technology flows into the many facets of our physical world, the answer is increasingly elusive.  As teachers, students, artists, and designers, our ability to navigate this changing terrain will continue to play an even greater role in our work.  As part of a two-part research project with Denmark-based LEGO Education, RISD faculty and students will explore the fascinating and rapidly evolving intersection between digital and analog experience, with a particular emphasis on its impact on learning experiences.

Collaborators Cas Holman (ID) and Nicole Merola (LAS) have broken the coursework component of the research into two phases, a 3-credit Wintersession LAEL Research Seminar (Phase 1) and a Spring 6-credit out-of-major Studio Elective (Phase 2). Students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.

In this Phase 2 interdisciplinary studio, led by Cas Holman and supported by Nicole Merola, students will further develop the research findings from Phase 1 through form-finding and prototype testing based research. The driving research question from Phase 1; "What is the potential of the digital and analog in proximity?" will become "What is the potential of digital and analog learning with LEGO bricks?" Two additional constraints will be added to the research; playful learning experiences with LEGO bricks, narrowing the question in order to imagine, visualize, and test experimental outcomes.

Representatives from LEGO Education will attend final critiques for this course.

This course is limited to 15 students and enrollment is by permission.  Enrolled students will receive 6 out-of-major studio elective credits.
