The undersigned join Washtenaw Solidarity with Farmworkers, students, and community members in demanding that Wendy's be banned from campus until they respect farmworkers!

Farmworkers throughout the United States have long endured low wages and unfair labor practices such as abysmal working conditions, wage theft, sexual assault, and slavery. A group of farmworkers in Florida, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), came up with the Fair Food Campaign to demand that fast food restaurants, food service providers, grocery stores and others pledge to eliminate these injustices.

Currently, the University is engaging in a competitive bidding process, in which many companies have submitted bids of over $10,000 through a confidential process not readily accessible to the student body or others affiliated with the university. We want a bid from Wendy's to be rejected and have until March 1 to convince the Union Bid Review Team that a bid from Wendy's must be denied.  

Students and community members have been working with the University of Michigan since 2015 to ask for support of farmworker justice through preventing Wendy's, a holdout among major fast food restaurants (Subway, Chipotle, McDonalds, Burger King, and Taco Bell have signed on) in its refusal to sign on to the Fair Food Campaign, from having a presence on campus.


*****WE AS A COMMUNITY DEMAND THAT******

1. The competitive bidding process be transparent and readily accessible to students and the community to provide input for decision making, and let the public know who is bidding for a spot in the STUDENT UNION on campus.

2. President Schlissel publicly make a commitment to address human rights abuses in food purchases by endorsing  the Fair Food Program.

3. The university bar restaurants that the Coalition of Immokalee Workers is currently campaigning against, such as Wendy’s, and other restaurants that have been accused of human rights abuses by the CIW.

4. The university update the University Code of Conduct to require that all restaurants provide full public transparency by adding language within their Requests for Proposal that requires vendors to answer questions regarding labor justice within their supply chain.

5. Food-based Strategic Suppliers must make their supply chain transparent, and be approved by the President’s Council on Labor Standards and Human Rights.
