MSc Dissertation: The Impact of Coping Self-Efficacy and Emotional Regulation on Mental Health when faced with Stress/Trauma

Dear Participant,

I am conducting a study, looking into how an individuals ability to cope and regulate their emotions buffers the psychological impact of trauma/stress on your wellbeing, both positively and negatively. The following information is intended to help you decide whether you would like to participate in the study.

What does the study involve?
Should you agree to take part, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire which looks into childhood and recent trauma, confidence in your coping skills, and managing your emotions and wellbeing. Please note there is a question asking if you have ever experienced a violent trauma however no details of the event will be asked or how you feel about it. The survey should take no longer than 20minutes to complete.

Do I have to take part?
No. Participation in this study is entirely voluntary, but participants must be 16+yrs. All participants have the right to withdraw from the study at any time, before, during or after the study without given reason up until the 6th August 2016, by contacting the researcher on the email address above and quoting your unique participant number. If there are any questions you feel uncomfortable answering please feel free to omit them but remember there are no right or wrong answers so please answer as honestly as possible. Please note the overall findings will be available but not individual results

Will your participation be confidential?
Yes, no personal information will be asked and responses will only be identifiable via participant number; and responses from individuals via the univerity participant pool can't be matched to student ID's. All data will only be accessed by the researcher, my supervisor and potentially a second examiner. The study has received ethical approval from the University of Northampton Psychology Ethics Committee and will be completed in accordance with the British Psychological Society's Code of Ethics and Conduct (2009) and the Data Protection Act (1998).
