I am ambivalent and find the outrage the term generates sort of amusing

I do not take offense from what words come out of your mouth, however your use of that word over a more specific job title leads me to assume you do not work in this industry professionally and are instead a student or community theater volunteer.

It's a diminutive and inappropriate in a professional setting.
