Why this petition matters

Started by Paul Davies

The Governors of St Bees have - either through negligent incompetence or for reasons still only known to themselves - overseen the development of financial problems which they presented to the world on Friday 13th March (great classy timing eh?), as a fait accompli reason for the closure of the school in July 2015. This clearly was unacceptable, as no attempt was made to rescue the school, nor, in the midst of their hubris, did they expect the mere mortals who compose the school's stakeholders (pupils, teachers, parents, former pupils) to be able to mount a rescue. But mount one they did and thanks to the sterling work of a Rescue Committee, a viable rescue plan has been developed and is good to go.

As of 09.30 today, 17th April 2015, a seemingly leaked letter from the Chair of the Governors, announced that the school still had to close. This was made public while negotiations with the Rescue team at an extended EGM were still ONGOING. Apparently, the letter states, closing the school was better 'for the pupils' than putting everyone through the 'unacceptable risk' of giving the school a one year stay of execution during which time the funding to secure its long term future will surely be found.

It has become abundantly clear that the problem here is not the finances but the Governors. They no longer seek to govern St Bees School and seem only interested in closing it down.

It is therefore time that you, Governors, RESIGN and let the thousands of us who do want our school to stay open, appoint new Governors who DO want to keep St Bees open. 432 years of tradition does not - can not - die that easy. You no longer have our confidence, trust or support.
