Extra Staten Island Railway trains scheduled ahead of Fourth of July

The Staten Island Railway will add extra trains Wednesday for borough residents looking to get a head start on the Fourth of July holiday.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Staten Island Railway is adding trains Wednesday for those looking to get a jump on the Fourth of July holiday.

The "Early Departure Getaway" schedule offers extra trains from 2:30 to 7:50 p.m. One express and one local train will wait at the St. George Ferry Terminal to meet each boat during that time frame.

On Thursday, the Fourth of July, the trains will operate on a Sunday schedule.

The Staten Island Railway also is prepared to add service prior to and after the 37th annual Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks Show if it is needed, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.

The fireworks will cause Staten Island Ferry service to be suspended between 8 and 10 p.m. from both the St. George and Whitehall terminals. The last boats will depart both terminals at 7:30 p.m. and hourly service will resume at 11 p.m.

Meanwhile, MTA buses will operate on a Saturday schedule on the Fourth of July. MTA Bridges and Tunnels will suspend all routine construction work at its crossings from 1 p.m. Wednesday through the Fourth.
