Don de faire des découvertes de manière accidentelle. Le terme vient du nom arabe de l'île de Ceylan, et il est tiré d'un conte persan «Les Trois Princes de Serendip», dont les héros faisaient souvent des découvertes par hasard.

La sérendipité est souvent invoquée par les chercheurs pour défendre la recherche non orientée. Exemple : la découverte, par un ingénieur de 3M, du Post-it. En cherchant à mettre au point un nouvel adhésif, il a trouvé une colle qui convenait particulièrement bien à la fabrication d'un papier collant temporaire.
