19TH CENTURY EUROPEAN PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURE 20 September-31 October 2012 5-7 Dover St, London W1S 4LD Alon Zakaim Fine Art is delighted to announce an exhibition of 19th Century European Paintings and Sculpture, to be held at our Dover Street gallery. The show will feature a collection of works by key artists of the period, exploring the range of styles and depth of content employed during this century of rapid change, evolution and progress, combined with the enduring influence of the Classical age. The captivating coastal scene portrayed in Franz Richard Unterberger's work Arnalfi, Golfo di Salerno forms a striking contrast to the monumental vista view of Paris by Victor and Joseph Navlet. Two works by Jean-Léon Gérôme reveal the delicate and emotive brushwork of this pivotal artist, one being a sketch for his highly important work of the same title, Cléopâtre et César. The contrasting representation of high society and working class life, subjects explored in great depth during this era, reveal the dexterity and powers of observation of artists of this period. Pierre Carrier-Belleuse’s large pastel work, Jeune Femme Ajustant son Corset investigates the theme of a woman at her toilette so masterfully explored by Degas; whilst paintings by Charles Soulacroix, Vittorio Reggianini and Delphin Enjolras reveal the luxury of 19th century society. In contrast to this, Théodore Gérard’s Market Day and Petrus van Schendel’s Evening Market employ tonal depth and strong lighting contrast to observe the lives of the workers. Demonstrating a wealth of variety including sculpture, portraiture and landscape, the exhibition provides a broad overview of a period in which both classical and social content played a key role. 19th Century European Paintings and Sculpture will run at Alon Zakaim Fine Art at 5-7 Dover Street, W1S 4LD from 20 September to 31 October 2012. Gallery opening hours are 9am - 6pm, Monday - Friday, or by appointment.
