The Maura DeLuca Trilogy #3

Riptide: Betrayal of Blood

Rate this book
Maura has never felt so alone in her life…nor has her existence ever been so overshadowed by peril …
Not only do both her parents—her distant but loving mother and recently- returned father—remain absent from her life, but due to the hideous error in judgement executed in collusion with her best friend, Valdamir, and adoptive sister, Susie, Maura has been cut off from the pair’s friendship and support, forbidden by both her father and the fallout from the dire outcome to see either of them. The heartbreak she suffers, brought on by the weight of these estrangements, is only intensified by the continued mysterious absence of her supernaturally-destined mate, Ron…whose disappearance delivers grave consequences Maura would have never dreamed possible…
Despised by her vampire cousin, Aldiva, for reasons Maura cannot yet comprehend, the young changeling will be forced to guard her back with every step, as she comes to realize this member of her vampire family would love nothing more than to bring about her demise. Aldiva’s wrath calls forth other members from both Vancouver covens, forcing them to rush to Maura’s aid—even though her father, their king, has expressly forbidden the other vampires to initiate contact with his daughter. Will her extended family on Vancouver Island obey, abandoning Maura to her doom, or will they instead rebel against Maxwell’s wishes in order to save her life?
In addition to the menace personified in her unsolicited enemy, the unlikely vampire princess will find herself drowning as she is pulled down into the depths of a far more devastating crisis…one which may condemn her to a fate she considers much more undesirable than death. But in order to tear herself free from the deadly pull which is drawing her under, Maura must enlist the help of her preternatural family, exposing her newfound friends to a danger none of them have ever had the misfortune to face before. Can she be saved or will the riptide drag Maura under…along with those she loves the most…
In this third and final book of The Maura DeLuca Trilogy, the reader will delve even deeper into the secrets guarded by Maura’s father, the mystery of Ron’s role in her life and the identities of the mysterious Vancouver Island Coven members who have, up until now, remained hidden in the shadows. This trilogy rounds out the segment of Maura’s life during which she discovers she is a member of The Born—a human destined to complete her transformation into a vampire! This series of young adult fantasy novels has been enjoyed by readers of nearly every age and are found by them to be dramatically different from any other vampire books they have read in the past. Discover a magical world filled with fae, angels, elves, pixies and other enchanting creatures in addition to two families made up of some of the most likeable vampires—for the most part—to ever exist.

Just when Maura needs her family most, she is given a sobering dose of tough love for a horrendous mistake she made as an uninformed “almost” vampire. Sure, her father, the King of Vampires meant well, but he has unknowingly left her overwhelmed, under-protected and terrified, not knowing what to expect or what is expected of her. Ron is still missing and her heart is feels like it has been caught in a vise. Little did she know, within her new vampire family, someone is plotting her demise, someone who may just be the most powerful vampire alive. Only her babysitters, sent by her father give her any comfort until the danger rises and more covens are called on to help the young Vampire Princess. Can they be trusted? Is she too human to understand the stance the vampires take?

Not knowing what to expect with her change, and unaware that her vampire genes are shutting down, poor Maura knows she may be left adrift in the world of humans just when she accepted her future eternal fate. What happening to Maura? Is it stress? Too heavy of a class load? The pain of losing Ron?

This is it, the final chapter of the first Maura DeLuca Trilogy and Claudette Melanson has held nothing back! Riptide: Betrayal of Blood plunges Maura into another maze of confusion and danger with no safe haven to land on. Ms.Melanson's title is not only intriguing, but tells the crux of the story as Maura is betrayed by not only her blood, but the familial blood that flows through the veins of her vampire family.

Brilliant characters, heart-warming vampire interactions and a nasty evil cousin are all onboard for this leg of Maura’s story. Ms.Melanson not only writes about magical beings, like the fae, pixies and more, but she uses her own magical mind to showcase a young teen as she comes of age in a most painful way. Sure, her father may not win Father-of-the –Year for the choices he has made, but like every parent, he is doing the best he can under the conditions he exists in. When push comes to shove, and a chance to re-ignite Maura’s vampire genes comes to light, be assured that Claudette Melanson probably gave one of her characters a little shove in the right direction, but can she/will she keep them safe? Guess you’ll have to read the book to find out, trust me, you’ll be glad you did!

I quickly finished this book just as with the first two books in this series. I rapidly recovered from my sadness about the series ending as I read there will be other books involving Maura and her family. With so many unanswered questions swimming around in my head, I am glad that the author has decided to continue writing about Maura's life. I adore this group of characters the author has brought into my life, each brings something different to the story producing a multitude of emotions inside of me. Val makes me smile... A LOT! Always the smart-mouthed, be true to himself and be damned if any disagree with him, personality. I absolutely adore him. Millicent... The ever watching, sometimes overprotective, always loving, substitute mother. Aoife, Alin, Gregor, Tik, and the rest... family. So caring, considerate, and protective, even if it means putting themselves in harm's way. I will be telling everyone I know about this series so that they can delight in this fantastic series as much as I have.

Wowee! What an addition to the Maura series! This one was especially intense & action packed. There are lots of awesome characters to meet, & a couple visits from some old friends.

Maura is really thrown for a loop. More, unwelcome, physical changes assail her. The cause takes some time to determine. The author makes you really feel for this girl. Plus, someone wants to hurt her, irreparably.

Luckily, she gets a brand new pack of friends to back her up. I'm especially fond of Milicent (who I can't help picturing as Morticia Addams *snap, snap*). Maura has such a good heart, that you can't help but love her, as do her newest acquaintances.

The lore is superb, as is the writing. I can't wait to catch up with Maura again!

Amazing

This entire trilogy was quite literally breathtaking! This book didn't disappoint me at all. I was definitely kept on the edge of my seat! I loved how most of the questions I was dying to know got answered. The promise of another trilogy let's me know that the unanswered questions will come to light.
I absolutely adored how she used an excerpt from Sherri Wingler's Wings of Darkness. I actually had to check and make sure I didn't switch to the wrong book lol.
I can definitely say with all honesty I have a new favorite author. That said please do yourself a favor and reads this trilogy. No spoilers from me.

The third book in this great paranormal series lives up to the first two. It is well written and the pace is perfect. Maura has grown into a caring & Kind woman. She has so much to deal with that I am happy she had Millicent to lean on. The book continues Maura's story and introduces new characters. It is a very detailed book so I read it at a medium pace as not to miss anything. I highly recommend this series to fans of paranormal YA books. it is a well developed and character driven series that leaves you thinking about it after you have finished.

She was so sweet and thoughtful. I loved val he was my favorite side character. He was hilarious. The storyline was great. The fight seen awesome! However, my favorite part was seeing the lovers be reunited.

This trilogy is one of those that you want to read from beginning to end without stopping.

The storyline is fantastic and flows seamlessly from one book to the next. The plot is well thought out, with great twists and turns throughout, and I loved the multi-dimensional characters.

I really enjoyed theses books, and am looking forward to reading the first book of the follow-up trilogy, The DeLuca Vampires.

A well-written supernatural series for readers of all ages.

A Vampire family's battle against the odds

I really enjoyed the final book in this series.
Maura has stopped turning into a vampire and its a race against time to find Ron her bonded mate before its to late. Also adding to the stress is one of vampires in the Coven is hunting her. Hopefully with the help of her extended vampire family she can beat the odds

I absolutely love where book 3 of the Maura DeLuca Trilogy - Riptide: Betrayal of Blood took me. The best out of the three, Claudette Melanson’s writing stepped it up another notch. While I was sad to have to stay dangling from Undertow’s (book 2) cliffhanger, I am glad I held on because Maura’s clumsy yet endearing attempts to do the right thing, atone for her wrongs, and find a way to make everyone happy had me hooked. I am glad to read that Melanson will have additional stories to hopefully tie up some loose ends and possibly let us see the progression of characters we were sorry to see so little of after their turn to the vampire side.

Riptide gave Maura a chance to reflect on her mistakes and make new ones like all teens are destined to do, but with her life as a born vampire not going as anyone had planned she is adamant about finding Ron, being with her mom and dad, and making amends for the mistakes that cost her friend her life and cost Maura her sister. Of course, as with most things in Maura’s life, none of those things will come easily or without a cost. Maura finds family, the good, the bad ass, and the ugly and it’s the ugly, Aldiva (her cousin), that will make her pay the most. Aldiva expects Maura to pay for the sins of her father and will pit herself against her own family who is insistent on protecting their new princess. Going from being with just her mom, to having both her parents, Ron, and Susie, to being all alone, joining a vampire coven that calls you princess is a nice, yet uncomfortable, change. Loving them so easily, well that seemed natural especially when Aldiva attacks and Maura is frantic to save a member of her new family, even at the cost of her own life.

As if Aldiva wanting her dead wasn’t bad enough Maura is faced with a new possible future, one that would separate her from her mother, father, and the family she is just getting to know. Enlisting their help will put them in danger, but it is the only way to find Ron and maybe save herself in the process. She fears what Ron will think of her being a vampire or worse what he will think of the mistakes she has made since he last saw her
.
Riptide was action packed and the fight scenes were well written but more than that it was the story of family and love, of taking responsibility, and dealing with hate when all sane avenues fail. Maura can be whiny at times, typical of a teenager, but in book three instead of just demanding to be treated like an adult, she makes decisions that shows she is truly becoming one. This trilogy shows the evolution from child to young adult and Maura, who doesn’t always make the right choices, resolves to fix her fractured family by taking the responsibility and punishment Aldiva and her father, Maxwell, both failed to take. Riptide made me laugh, cry, and cheer. My only issue is that it ended too soon and that we will have to wait for other little stories from Maura’s life.

I need to go over a few things before I start my review. This book is my most anticipated book of the year. I have seriously been counting down the days until it came out. I was so excited in fact that I figure I had to read it in style and purchased a magenta Kindle. It is the first book I have read on it and sat in the package for over a week before I cracked it open. I feel like this series needs to be read in purple and reds. Now that I have expressed my excitement I shall move forward with my review.

The cover is amazing. Oh dear lord it is so good. I've loved every cover in this series but this took it to the next level. It captures the essence of all the pages in a beautifully wrapped package. I just can't stop looking at it. It is one of my favorite covers of all time. I hope you realize that this review is going to be gushing over everything because I'm in love with this series.

Since I waited for this book to come out, I tried to read it slow. I didn't want to finish it too quickly but I found myself devouring it. I just couldn't put it down. Maura has grown and matured and I loved watching her mature in to a beautiful and loving lady. Her kindness and fairness is something to marvel over. She is my favorite and the perfect point of view of the story. She continues to show her strength and love in each page. We get introduced to new characters and see some old favorites. Millicent is my favorite new character. She is strong and sultry. I fell in love with her from her scolding and loving ways. She left me feeling like Maura is being well attended to and shown so much love. Now my favorite old character came back in some scenes and I couldn't be more excited. Val is such a bottle of beautiful sassy and snark. I have to say that I have a deep crush on that rebel vampire. I've decided that he is going to be my new book boyfriend. Aoife was a great new addition and I loved her Irish ways.

My favorite part was any scene with Val. I found him to be hilarious drugging Susie all the time. I ended up snorting from laughter a couple of times. He is just so blunt and devious. I'm just going to say it I LOVE VAL! My second favorite scene was the epic battle with Aoife and Aldiva in Craigdarroch Castle. The last scene which was one of my favorites was the story of the twins. It was touching and heartbreaking and a true scene of love and endurance. I'm not going to say anymore because I don't want to give anything else away.

The writing was superb and flowed nicely. It was a great reading experience and I will recommend it to all of my paranormal loving friends. I will scream it from the rooftops how much I love this series. So I'm warning all of my friends that I will be talking about this series for a lifetime.

I need more from this fantastic series! In this next addition we get see another side of Maura's family that has been hidden from her. She and her father are not the only vampires in the family after all. I loved seeing the different members of her family. They were all interesting and unique. You couldn't help, but to fall in love with each one except for Aldiva. My favorite was definitely Aoife! She was such a delightful character that just brought joy even in the story's darkest moments. There's still a lot going on with Maura's mother and her best friend Susie since their transformations so unfortunately we don't really see or hear too much about them. But I'm hoping that we will in the next trilogy 'cause I know Maura misses them. She does have new people in her life, but it still doesn't make up for the people she has lost who are even more dear to her. Ron is also one of the people that we haven't seen or heard from up until now. When Maura and her family of vampires find out what's really going on with Ron they decide they MUST rescue him. Not only to save Ron, but save Maura as well. The ending of the book is what I've mostly been hoping for since Ron had went away. Of course not everything is back to the way that it should be, but Maura finally has Ron back! I've been waiting for them to reunite ever since he left! We finally get our questions answered of what has been happening with Ron and we get to see who his family is. And then of course there's a few kickass fight scenes that I feel some stories lack, but this one certainly didn't. It was heart pounding, rough, dirty, and bloody fighting which I think fight scenes need. Especially, if you're going to have a bunch of paranormal creatures up against each other. This book certainly delivered and did not leave me disappointed. I love how with each new book Maura becomes more mature and stands up for herself. In the first book she was this ordinary girl in school who didn't dare fight or even like confrontation whatsoever. Now if you mess with her or anyone she loves, she'll fight back! She still doesn't want to hurt others, but she knows if she has to then she will. Besides, Maura is the princess after all so I think knowing that part of herself helps. It seems like that gives her a confidence boost and not in a cocky way. She just knows that she's the princess so she has to be respected. Normally, if you disrespect someone who is of royalty it's off with your head. But Maura isn't ruthless like that. She wants her people to respect her because she shows them respect. The book does start off slow, but trust me once you get into it you won't want to put it down!

This is the third and final book in this arc of the Maura DeLuca series and I have waited a long time to read this book. I absolutely loved the first two and the pace that they set was something that made me want to rush through this book. The story is continued very well and the author manages to maintain the same amount of suspense. A whole new array of characters are introduced and some are very delightful. It is rather interesting to get to know Maura's family and we once again meet Val, someone we became acquainted with very well among others. Millicent is endearing and there is no doubt that the reader will fall in love with her. Aldiva on the other hand is an interesting addition to the characters that are a part of this story.

There is a lot revealed about the Vampires and their existence. We are also told about the way they live their lives and the reverence with which many treat Maura is both sweet and overwhelming, for both her and the reader. We are also introduced to the other magical people who exist including faeries. The author has brought out Maura's feelings of loss, pain, loneliness and her longing for her mate very well ensuring that the reader also follows them closely.

A few times it felt as though some points were continuously repeated, perhaps to ensure that the reader remembers some points which the author feels are essential. Maura has grown from the previous two books and is a stronger person both in mind and spirit. Some story lines in this part seem to be unnecessary at the moment, but may be picked up and pursued in later books. The pace picks up after the middle followed by some much awaited action. With the amount of information provided in this story and the number of characters introduced, I found myself left with a lot of new questions at the end of the story. Thankfully enough, there's more to come and the story will be continued in different trilogy sets. Frankly, I am quite excited for those since this story, though a little slow, has set the foundation for wonderful twists and plots. Overall a satisfactory book and will whet the reader's appetite enough to keep them waiting for the next.

Riptide is Book 3 in the series. I read Books 1 and 2 earlier. I enjoyed them very much. I enjoyed this book very much as well.

The central character Maura is very likeable and funny. Maura is dealing with some serious issues. She is a princess. She is a born Vampire. She is changing to become immortal.

Claudette has written the trilogy in a really nice style. It is a great balance of serious Vampire mythology, and Maura's humour and good nature with dealing with all the serious events that are happening around her.

The great detail in this book about Maura's special diet and her relationship with her new family is really enjoyable. I loved the part where to make the giant bowl of salad more appetising, half a bag of a special ingredient was added.

I note that the red and black color theme was maintained, which is great.

I loved the inclusion of a reading from Wings of Darkness by Sherri Wingler.

Anyone would enjoy this trilogy. The books are page turners and very enjoyable to read.

First I must say I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a completely honest review. Riptide is the third book in the Maura DeLuca trilogy and by far my favorite of the three. I loved books 1 and 2 but this one had me on an emotional roller coaster wanting to reach into my kindle and choke the crap out of one very evil vampire. This book picks up where book 2 ended and introduces us to a whole new group of Maura's extended family, some great lovable people and some not so nice, plus it brings back some old favorite characters as well. Again this book is told through the eyes of Maura allowing you to feel and view life from her point of view. If you have read books 1 and 2 then this is a must read! If you have not read this trilogy then I would recommend picking up all three, you will not be disappointed. I look forward to further books about Maura and her family.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, the third in Ms. Melanson's Maura DeLuca YA vampire series...captivating, compelling and extremely hard to put down. Honestly, I think the best part of the story was the fight scene at the end and then the continuation of the love story that has captured my heart.

I highly recommend this book, and this series, to lovers of great YA fantasy, especially vampire tales with a unique twist.
