Creating a Fearless Learning Environment

How do the questions we ask and the choices we give students influence engagement, motivation, critical thinking, and ownership of learning? In this 15- hour course, participants will explore a variety of strategies and techniques that increase critical thinking skills, student engagement, intrinsic motivation, and student ownership of their own learning.

Topics and strategies to be covered:
- creating classroom environments that foster student motivation and engagement
- designing higher order thinking questions
- student discussion techniques
- effective use of collaboration to increase engagement
- developing student choice in the classroom
- student directed goal setting and progress monitoring
- identifying transferrable critical thinking skills
- metacognition/habits of mind
- quick student centered activities that promote discussion and thinking

Participants will walk away with numerous tools and strategies to add to their ever growing educator toolbox. This course blends practical strategies with current research and best pedagogical practice and is designed for 3-12 classrooms.
