Filmmaker/Infielder Cody Decker Called up to Padres

Things are about to get more interesting in the Padres clubhouse. Come Monday, Cody Decker will be on the roster.

One of the most colorful minor leaguers in recent memory, Decker, a 22nd round draft pick in 2009, has been called up to the majors. He will join the team in Arizona for Monday night’s game.

Decker is known for his social media presence as much as he is his baseball skills. The infielder, who has never played in the majors, has nearly 20,000 Twitter followers. For comparison purposes, that’s almost twice as many as Jedd Gyorko, who is in his third year in the majors. Why does Decker have so many followers? Probably due to tweets like this one:

Decker made sure to thank his fans and team as well.

Decker may be best known for his film “On Jeff Ears”, about the elaborate prank he and his team, the El Paso Chihuahuas, played on teammate Jeff Francoeur, convincing Frenchy that fellow Chihuahua Jorge Reyes is deaf.  But that was only one of his movie projects.  In another absurdist short film, titled simply “Brad.”, Decker enjoys visiting with former major league catcher Brad Ausmus, in a way…

But Decker’s promotion is not for his filmmaking skills. The power hitting corner infielder has slugged .524 over seven minor league seasons, and this year hit 21 homers and drove in 75 runs in 120 games for the Chihuahuas, who were eliminated from the Pacific Coast League playoffs on Saturday. While we’re not likely to see Decker back in the majors to start 2016, it’s great to see guys like this rewarded for their effort and dedication with some time in a major league clubhouse.

And who knows, if he brings his cardboard cutout of Ausmus, he may have an advantage in next year’s Spring Training if Ausmus happens to end up back in San Diego as the new manager.
