University of Fraser Valley student proposed to while graduating

WATCH: A young couple, a special occasion…and a very public surprise. Julia Foy reports.

A young woman from the University of Fraser Valley had two major life milestones take place at the exact same time.

Sasha Morneau was crossing the stage to receive her bachelor degree on Friday when her boyfriend Brett Taylor came out of the crowd to propose to her.

To the delight (and applause) of her peers, she said yes.

“I think I sputtered ‘yes’ out. I choked it out,” she said afterwards.

“I saw his friend come down with a camera, and thought ‘oh dear, something is going down.'”

Taylor, who graduated last year, said he always knew he wanted his proposal to be public. But when the moment came, he was suddenly at a loss for words.

“I had a lot of things I was going to say, and then I just looked at the ring and realized there were a lot of stuff happening, so I got sensory overload. I just got down on one knee and say ‘will you marry me?'” he said.

“I felt like I was going to pass out.”

The two have been going out for three years, and plan to get married next September.

But which event was bigger for Morneau? She says it’s a tie.

“This degree took me eight years, a car accident, a brain tumour, a lot of things,” she said.

“They’re both pretty big…I don’t want to minimize [the proposal], but the degree was huge too.”
