CAMDEN, Maine — The Camden Police Department wants to help the elderly and disabled adults stay in their home safely and believe they have a plan to help with that goal.

The department announced this week it will operate the Good Morning Camden program.

For residents who sign up for the program, the police department will call them each day between 8 and 10 a.m. to say good morning and see how the person is doing. If the person cannot be reached by telephone, a police officer will stop at the residence to check on the person.

The program is free.

“The goal is to assist these people so they can continue living an independent lifestyle,” the department stated in a news release. “Good Morning Camden will aid in eliminating many concerns families may have about loved ones who live alone. The program provides the security of knowing that the family member will have a source of daily contact at no cost to the family or individual.”

Any resident who is 60 years old or older or an adult with a disability who lives alone is eligible.

A short application must be completed and a waiver signed. This will provide the department with some basic information about the participant. Interested individuals can all 236-7953 or stop by the Camden Police Department and complete the application. An officer will drop off a form if a person is unable to go online or stop by the public safety building.

The online application can be obtained at camdenmaine.gov.

The department stated the Good Morning Camden program will complement programs such as Lifeline, which respond to emergencies when activated.

A similar project, the Friendly Caller Program, which was instituted in Aroostook County last year, has hundreds of participants.
