Interdisciplinary 3D Chess Exhibition

My students need a Makergear M2 printer to make 3D prints. Each student will design and print their own chess set using combinations of cones, cylinders and spheres, manipulated using various geometric transformations.

My Students

When you walk down the halls of our middle school, or sit in our assembly, one word in particular comes to mind: pride. Maine is a state full of proud people, who regardless of circumstance, try to conduct themselves with dignity. While our students live in a district with high rates of poverty where many qualify for free lunches and others bring home food on weekends through our school backpack program, each child arrives at school hungry for knowledge and ready to learn.

Sometimes, rural Maine can feel like an island, isolated from the outside world.

As teachers, our challenge is to bring the outside world to our students, and to show them the opportunities and rewards that exist for those who pursue them. Our students are ambitious, entrepreneurial, and visionary. They will be the ones to build the bridges and networks of tomorrow. They are the faces of the future, bright eyed and ready for action.

My Project

Students will learn how to play chess before they delve into the world of geometric transformations and volumes of geometric solids. During a 10-week project, students will learn how to apply mathematical skills using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software as they design their own unique chess sets. Meanwhile, students will explore chess literature before making connections with war and conflict and associated journalism and historical and contemporary works of literary and social interest.

Students will use the 3D-printed chess sets they create to play simultaneous exhibition games against their teacher, to which the community will be invited.

Students will learn the value of Mathematics in an increasingly technological world, and the appreciation of the significant relevance of literature and media in our society. Your donations will help them achieve where many of them have not even imagined possible. Thank you!
