The number of driving licences seized by the traffic police, following the instructions of a Supreme Court-appointed committee on traffic norms violations, has crossed the 11,000 already mark since its implementation on December 15.
According to the figures released till December 24, as many as 11,017 drivers have had to surrender their licences for a temporary suspension of three months. Of these seized licences, 6,883 were issued in Delhi.
The violations include red light jumping, using mobile while driving, over speeding, carrying passengers on goods vehicle and drunken driving.
The maximum violations in a single category are cases of signal jumping which has resulted in 6,887 drivers (two, three and four wheelers) losing their licences.
Then there are particular situations when a driver either does not hold a licence or is not found carrying one when flagged down. In such cases, the vehicle is impounded. A total of 184 such vehicles have been impounded so far.
Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dr. Muktesh Chander said even now there was resistance from many drivers, whose alibi was not being aware of the Supreme Court order.
Traffic police personnel on duty have been instructed to carry the copy of the order as well as newspaper clippings to confront this claimed ignorance of law.
Recently, the Delhi Police booked over 100 drunk drivers seizing their licences in the city’s popular hub Hauz Khas Village.
In one of the recent cases, the personal assistant of a judicial magistrate tried to use the influence, but ended up surrendering his licence, it is learnt.
