BANGOR, Maine — A large hole on Hammond Street in downtown Bangor has been repaired and the roadway is open to traffic, city officials announced Wednesday afternoon.

The hole, which was roughly 8 or 9 feet deep, 30 feet long and 15 feet wide, was caused by a collapsed brick sewer line beneath the street.

“The sewer is repaired and Hammond Street between Court Street and Franklin Street is now open to traffic,” Public Works Director Dana Wardwell said in an email. “Happy New Year!”

The repairs finished in plenty of time for the city’s New Year’s Eve celebration Wednesday night. Wardwell had said Tuesday crews planned to fix the sewer line with a modern pipe.

The hole disrupted traffic in the downtown area throughout the day Tuesday, shutting down Hammond Street between Court and Franklin Streets.
