Mumbai, Apr 25: Reacting to the killing of 25 CRPF troopers in a forested patch of Chhattisgarh, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning the claims made by his government over the success of demonetization. If note ban plunged funding to left wing extremists outfits, then how were the Naxals successful in annihilating 25 jawans, said Thackeray.

Thackeray’s comments on demonetization are considered to be a jibe on PM Modi’s claim that demonetization drive has led to a decrease in Naxalism activities across the country. PM Modi in February had told in the Rajya Sabha that note ban has directly impacted the terrorists and Naxalites across the country and post demonetisation drive, around 700 Maoists have surrendered and it has also choked the funds that were used by the terrorists.

Uddhav Thackeray has been questioning the demonetization drive and has previously said that the note ban drive is disastrous and could backfire the government. “We are not opposed to eradicating black money from the country’s economy… This is a bold measure. We object to the manner in which it has been done without giving adequate time to the people,” he had previously said.

Thackeray’s latest attack on note-ban comes after the Naxalites attack the CRPF personnel in Chhattisgarh on Monday that led to the killing of at least 25 jawans. The attack is considered as one of the deadliest attacks by Naxalites on security forces. The Naxalites attacked the jawans in Kalapathar area of south Bastar region which is considered to be one of the worst-hit left-wing extremism in the country.

Calling the Naxal attack in Sukma district as a ‘cold blooded murder’, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said that the strategy to combat extremism will be revamped.
