Comedian Louis C.K. surprised guests at a Saugus comedy club Saturday in his first set in the Boston area since he admitted to sexual misconduct last year.

Mike Clarke, the owner of the Giggle Comedy Club, told The Boston Globe that Louis C.K., of Newton, was in town visiting family and called him to see if he could perform.

This comes after a spate of surprise appearances in New York comedy clubs that left guests divided. Some felt it was too soon for the comedian to make a return, while others embraced him, giving him standing ovations.

Clarke said Louis C.K. briefly addressed the misconduct at the beginning of his set on Saturday night. Clarke told the Globe that the comedian asked the audience how their year was going, before saying his had been challenging.

Clarke said no one left the performance and that Louis C.K. was well received, according to the Globe.

In November 2017 Louis C.K. admitted to claims by several women that he masturbated in front of them. Many of the women told The New York Times that when they objected, the comedian made moves to torpedo their comedy careers.

After the Times detailed this accounts in a story, FX Networks ended their association with him, and canceled the release of his film "I Love You Daddy."

"He's a good friend, he's a good guy, and I believe people deserve second chances," Clarke told the Globe. "He did a great job last night."
