Introduction:

This game is a pretty simple 200 to complete in a little over 5 hours at most. You will need to play the game on Normal, then Hard, and finally Ultra Hard for the "Gold digger" achievement which only unlocks when you "Take a Risk". The main thing you need to focus on is keeping your family alive, killing every eagle you see, and taking the time to go hunting every chance you get.

Normal Playthrough:

This playthrough will unlock the Hard difficulty (which in turn unlocks Ultra Hard) and also unlock most of the achievements in the game. Keep your family alive at all costs. You need to hunt every chance you get and when you do, hold off on grabbing the animal meat so that you can kill more animals before time runs out. You need the food but you also need to kill all the animals you can for "Psycho Killer," the longest achievement in the game. Also be sure to take on every quest you can, talk to everyone, and make sure you take the fork in the road that leads to a fort or large town. As you play the game, also watch out for eagles and shoot them to keep them from taking your kids.

Hard Playthrough:

This will be a little tougher than normal but keeping your family alive is just a goal to keep the game interesting. You want to continue hunting as much as you can, gather a lot of gold, and clean up any achievements you missed the first time.

Ultra Hard Playthrough:

This playthrough should be pretty short unless you still need a lot of animals for "Psycho Killer." When you get to the first river crossing that has the gold minigame, select the option "Take a Risk" and complete the minigame and it should unlock "Gold Digger". This is the only real difficulty related achievement in the game because this is the only thing that seems to trigger the "Gold Digger" achievement. If you are missing animals after this, keep playing and you should unlock "Psycho Killer" in this playthrough if you have not already.

Conclusion:

Overall, this is a pretty easy game. You can get most of the achievements in 2 playthroughs and you can finish up the last 2 achievements on ultra hard difficulty which should just take a partial playthrough to reach the river crossing and get "Gold digger." It's a pretty relaxing game that requires more time than effort and makes a decent addition to your Windows Phone game collection.

There are 20 achievements with a total of 200 points

  • Get yer first food by killin' 4 small animals

This will be one of your first achievements. At the start of the game, you will go through a tutorial on how to hunt and you must kill 4 squirrels to complete it. As soon as you pick up the 4th piece of meat, the achievement unlocks.

  • Kill an eagle before it get your kids

See: "The Eagle's Landed" achievement description.

  • Complete your first mission

This achievement is story related and you cannot miss it. You will get several quests as you play through the game. They involve taking strangers to towns or forts, meeting someone else in another town, and delivering packages. Some of these quests can be failed if you take a road that goes around your destination. As soon as you complete your first objective, the achievement unlocks.

  • Complete the first berries pickin' minigame

This achievement involves another tutorial. At the start of the game, you will come up to a berry bush. Finish the minigame and the achievement will unlock when you are done.

  • Cure a family member from illness or injury either by resting or by asking for help

As you play the game, your family will get sick. This happens very often. More so near the end of the game and you stay low on food a lot. Once someone gets sick, stop the wagon and have your family rest for a few days. This should cure whoever is sick and the achievement will unlock. If you keep going, there is a chance a random NPC will stop you and offer help. This will also unlock the achievement.

  • Visit 2 forts

There are several forts in the game and you will pass through at least 2 of them during your travels. Once you reach the second fort, the achievement will unlock.

  • Complete 5 missions

Keep doing missions for people you come across in towns, forts, and on the trail. This should unlock in your first playthrough as long as you make sure to talk to everyone to complete the quests and pick up new ones. Also, do not take any roads that go around your destination because you will not be able to turn in that quest or pick up any in that area.

  • Reach Sweetwater River junction with yer whole family alive

You will come across this fort pretty early in the game. If you are playing on normal difficulty then you should have little trouble keeping your family alive unless you completely ignore their needs. The achievement unlocks as you go into the front gate.

  • Reach the Salt lake Cutoff or the California Trail with yer whole family alive

This area of the game is a little over the half-way point. Make sure to keep going for food and keep your family rested. Do not worry about taking too much time. Keeping everyone alive is the important thing. Again, playing on normal will make this much simpler.

  • Reach Oregon with at least one other family member alive

See: "Dad of the year" achievement description.

  • Kill 10 deers on yer way to Oregon

This achievement should unlock in your first playthrough. Remember to hunt every chance you get. Deer are pretty common early in the game so make sure you kill as many as you can when you go hunting. You can also wait on picking up the meat when you go hunting. If you do not pick up your limit, you can keep killing deer and grab what you need when the timer is almost up.

  • Kill 20 buffaloes on yer way to Oregon

Buffalo are pretty common in the second half of the game and sometimes you will come across a stampede running across the road and you can hunt them without the hunting minigame's limit. Remember to wait on grabbing the buffalo meat until the timer has run down a bit so you can kill more than required to complete the hunting game. You may kill enough for this achievement in your first playthrough but if you do not, this counts across all plays so you can pick up where you left off on your next playthrough if you do not unlock the achievement the first time through.

  • Kill 15 bears on yer way to Oregon

This achievement is the same as the one for the deer and buffalo. Wait on picking up the meat and kill as many as you can while hunting. You should get this in your first playthrough, but if not, the kills carry over.

  • Meet at least 5 historical figures

As you travel down the trail, you will see people standing on the side of the road and will meet some in towns as well. Be sure to talk to everyone. Some of these characters are obviously famous and others are not until you talk to them. This achievement will unlock in your first playthrough as long as you talk to everyone you meet.

  • Trade with Native Americans at least 5 times

You will come across the Native Americans several times in your game. Make sure to talk to them every chance you get and trade with them. If you do, there should be little trouble unlocking this in your first playthrough.

  • Reach Oregon without lettin' any eagle attack yer kid

This achievement is easily missed if you do not pay attention. While you travel, sometimes you will see and hear an eagle flying in the background. If you are unsure or did not see it, your family will comment on it and say something like "I bet you can't shoot that bird." When you see the bird on screen, start tapping the screen and when the bird flies past the edge of the screen, your character will shoot it as it swoops down. It is pretty easy to kill but make sure you are paying attention while you play because they will show up a lot more as the game progresses. Once you complete the game, the achievement will unlock if the eagles did not grab any of your kids.

  • Reach Oregon with yer whole family alive

While playing on normal during your first playthrough, it should be pretty easy to keep your family alive. Make sure to keep them well fed and rested throughout the game and take care of them if they get sick. This becomes increasing difficult on harder difficulties so make sure to play the game on easy to make this achievement a lot easier.

  • Kill 50 small animals, 20 deers, 50 bulls and 30 bears on yer way to Oregon

This achievement will take a couple of playthroughs to complete and will be the reason for a third playthrough if you need it

  • Collect 50 pounds of gold and 8 diamonds without gettin' any bad stones on yer way to Oregon

This will be one of the last achievements you earn unless you are missing some animals for "Psycho Killer". During the gold gathering games, you must tap on the pieces of gold and diamonds to collect them. If you tap a normal rock then your count resets. Tapping on leaves will not hurt your progress towards this achievement. There is one problem with this achievement, it only seems to unlock on Ultra Hard settings when selecting the option "Take a Risk", which gives you less time to collect gold and gives you a higher goal to reach. Play through the game at least on normal first and collect as much as you can on your first playthrough. When you reach the first river crossing with the gold gathering game on your Ultra Hard playthrough, select "Take a Risk" and the achievement should unlock when you finish that round.

  • Reach Oregon without ever bein' hit by any animals

This achievement seems to only count hunting missions where you gather food. During the free for all sessions where you have to kill as many as you can in a time limit, it seems you can get hit and the achievement still unlock but try not to get hit at all to be safe.
