Ghost's Sight #2

Ghost's Dilemma

Rate this book
"Moon shine on me, Ghost. When you look at me like this, how can I even think of anything but making love to you?"

Ghost is content to spend all his free time in bed with Gerry. But scandal and hate surrounding Ghost's appointment as the first male witch and a deadly epidemic force Ghost to make choices that might cost him Gerry's love.

Spurred on by a message from his mentor, Ghost embarks alone on a journey through mystical underground tunnels and lost civilizations to the frozen lands of his origin, seeking a way to neutralize the threat back home. While he struggles to find a balance between his duties as a witch and his calling as a seer, all Ghost really wants is to return to the haven he has found in Gerry's arms.

I've been writing since I could first hold a pencil, and by all accounts I didn't limit myself to paper. Walls, tablecloths and the occasional sibling were all fair game, and it shouldn't be surprising to learn that markers were banned in my home with all due haste. Although I now content myself with inconveniencing electrons, the desire to bring the stories in my mind to life hasn't waned.

In my spare time, I read, putter in the kitchen, and relax on my terrace, weather permitting, with my corgi who strives to be part muse, part food disposal. I'm also addicted to coffee and have a close relationship with my Keurig.

While this story was fine, it wasn't until over 60% into the book that I became fully invested.

Before that were all of the pages about Ghost discovering an illness in the village and trying to come up with a cure. I found those early parts of the book fairly boring and hard to care much about, because I tend to be way more of a romance kind of guy.

Then came word of a possible cure very far away in the Northlands, where Ghost's mentor, the Witch, had recently left to roam.

Once Ghost boarded the secret, underground transportation to the Northlands, my attention had officially been grabbed.

The series had previously taken place in what I'd consider a pre-industrial era setting, with everyone being hunters and gatherers, wearing pelts and drying meats to survive the harsh winters.

Then suddenly...

#MindSlightlyBlownFolks

Once Ghost is in the Northlands, I couldn't put the book down, wanting to know every little detail as soon as possible.

One of my very favorite parts was the addition of 9 y.o. Egill, another pale-haired, northern boy who, like Ghost, had "the sight". He was a smart little guy and played a very important role in providing the cure to the epidemic killing people in Ghost and Gerry's village.

As far as the romance goes, Ghost and Gerry had formalized their mate status, but there wasn't a lot of new ground covered here that wasn't covered in book 1.

In regards to steamy scenes, there were a few, but they felt entirely unnecessary to me in this particular story. I found myself automatically skimming past every page where the pene came out to play. For me, sex doesn't automatically equate to deep feelings, and it felt like a distraction here, so meh.

I would love to read the follow-up story of Ghost, Gerry and Egill's little family, as they grow and face upcoming challenges.

I'd rate this story at around 3.5 stars, mostly because the first 60+% of the story didn't really grab me.

I really enjoyed reading this story - the author has created a vivid, exciting world that is thoroughly inviting. There is a great deal of substance to the characters, and the storyline captured my attention and kept me interested all the way through. Although this is the second book in the series, I read this as a stand-alone story and was perfectly satisfied. I highly recommend!

Liked this second book better than the first book
In this book Ghost and Gerry deal with an epidemic.
So ghost goes North for some help. Find a another clan and learns a bunch of stuff. To much detail will ruin it for you.
The world building and characters are much better in this book.
We get to see some more of Gerry and Ghost doing their daily thing together. More sexy times too.
Pretty sure there will be more. The ending left a perfect set-up for more.
Overall, better than book one and entertaining enough to look forward to another episode. A decent read.

With this novel, Morwen Navarre builds upon the world she created when we first met Ghost and the Witch, and she does not disappoint.

As you read, you can't help but feel there are other stories around every corner, just waiting to be told. Ghost himself comes upon one or two of them on his travels. And, like the world he inhabits, Ghost has grown and matured as a character. Set a short time after the first, we get to see him fulfilling his new role in the community where he lives with his Alpha, Gerry.

I won't write any spoilers in this review, but I will say that this series of stories is for you whether you like romance, sci-fi, adventure or fantasy. It's imaginative, mysterious, and most of all unique. You don't need to have read the first book to enjoy this, but you may well find yourself seeking it out afterwards.

As a reader, I can't draw a convenient line to say where the future ends, and where the dark ages begin anew. It is a full and richly textured canon that leaves you wanting to know more, and I really hope there will be many more books in this series.

Brilliant storytelling, and the well written love scenes between Ghost and Gerry are the icing on top.

I didn’t read the first book in this collection and I feel I would have gained more from the overall story if I had but I don’t feel it took away from the beauty in book 2 as both Ghost and Gerry are strong male characters who are not afraid of love and show their emotions.

Gerry is Ghost alpha and protector. Ghost has taken over the healing of the community using his witch craft and visions that he gets. Sometimes the visions come in riddles that he must decipher and make sense of. When confronted with a situation that will affect the people in his community he must figure out the answers that will rest in only what he can see and what he knows.

This is a story of m/m love but it goes past just the sex, these men are committed to each other in ways that can rarely be seen in relationships today. They support each other and have taken the vows of being protector and the protected. While Gerry will want to rush in and take care of what threatens Ghost, he trust in the man he loves enough to allow Ghost to do what he needs to do in his role as healer.

The writing style is not of the modern age, it felt as if the scenes were a mixture of the past and the future all weaved into one time frame which gave this story a unique and romantic feel as you read it. While the beauty of the story and writing was clear, once I was done I felt like I had read a classic, full of beauty, love and strong messages about life, personality and the value of humans. I am not normally a fan of this genre but I am very thankful I was offered a chance to read this book. It touched my heart and soul and I don’t think I will forget Ghost and Gerry any time soon.

This is a series and should be read in order, no cliffhanger but unfinished story.

Enjoyed the characters, story and everything else EXCEPT the covers of this and the first book have nothing to do with the main characters who is fair skinned with white blonde hair.

Six Word Summary: Gripping sequel which shows us more of the world and the characters we love.

My Thoughts: Once again I really enjoyed the world building and story telling of Morwen Navarre’s Witch’s Apprentice series. Where Ghost’s Sight was sweet and short, Ghost’s Dilemma, expands upon the world and offers a more in depth look and exploration of the characters.

Ghost’s Dilemma sees readers return to the world Ghost and Gerry as they move forward with their lives. In the time since the first book, the pair have settled down, moved into a new house, and become more comfortable in their respective positions within the village. It’s really quite nice getting to see the comfort and domestic fluff of the pair before the real drama of the novel starts.

Where the first book sets up the social hierarchy of the village, the second provides more insight into the world of Alphas, Dependants, Mates, and Witches. Whereas Ghost’s Sight set up the idea of Alphas being the providers and protectors of their Dependants, Ghost’s Dilemma explores and provides a further look into Mates and the otherness of Witches. It was really nice seeing Gerry defer to Ghost and treat him more as an equal in the relationship, especially when compared to other relationships within the novel.

The plot of Ghost’s Dilemma sees Ghost tested as a Witch and healer, as he struggles to cure an epidemic that has spread throughout his village. I really enjoyed seeing a more assertive and in charger characterisation of Ghost. The same with Gerry, we see him come to terms with his relationship with Ghost and how they fit as Alpha and Mate.

Ghost’s Dilemma also expands upon and explores more of the surrounding world. I loved seeing the land of the ‘Witch’s Apprentice’ in a larger scope. To be given more information about the larger environment, landscape, and other societies within the world was great! I loved being slowly offered glimpses and more information about ‘ancient’ technologies and trying to figure out the modern day equivalents.

Best Bits:

*Gerry and Ghost are still adorable. Where Ghost’s Sight was focused on their pair meeting and falling in love, this novel expands upon their relationship and sees them working together as a couple. It was really nice seeing this extension of their relationship.

*The blurring of genres. When I first wrote the read Ghost’s Sight, I wasn’t sure if I would class the book as fantasy or paranormal one. The world is set sometime after an advanced civilisation has fallen and while it definitely reads like a fantasy novel with the villages, magic, and forests appearing in the book, it really has a paranormal ‘psychic’ vibe. It’s great reading the novel and experiencing the fantasy angle, but after you’ve put it down, thinking of it as a paranormal one.

*A third book! On goodreads, Navarre has stated that she is working on the third book of the series. So I will be eagerly looking out for that book when it becomes available 🙂

Recommendations: As this is a second book, I would really recommend checking out the first book first, but if you like fantasy romance novels, I would definitely give this book a go! While I have stated above it is a paranormal book, if you are a fan of either, I would really recommend picking the series up.

Please note: I received a copy of Ghost's Dilemma from NetGalley.

This is a stronger story than the first book. The characterisation is still strong with clear identification of characters. The first book emphasised the establishment of those characters through tension and misunderstanding. Here the focus is more in terms of their reaction to circumstances. This makes for a more effective establishment of personality traits. The baddies in this book are not really developed as individuals; rather they provide machinations in the background, which have repercussions that drive the plot. The plot is quite simple with limited tension that is somewhat predictable. What are effective are the world building and the characters that inhabit this post-apocalyptic world. The technology and the magic system are well articulated and fit the situation. They are described well, but they remain somewhat incomplete in their explanation.

The author provides detailed information about the setting, along with references to cultural structures and history. What is known of the history is fragmentary and to a certain extent localised within individual social groups, each of which has their own mysticism to explain what is not known. This is interesting but does heighten what is not known and the reader is left with gaps in understanding. Perhaps this was the author’s intent to facilitate empathy.

The relationship between the two central characters remains strong with effectively expressed sexual activity. This is largely appropriate to the context and is not overdone. There are misunderstandings and slight tension around the relationship if anything these are the weakest parts of the plot and are easily recognised as well as their resolution.

There is a steady pace to the story. Despite the occasional scenes of tension, the pace is set by the description and more time is spent on context than on action. As such the reader moves with the story rather than being driven by it.

The end of the story is quite predictable with outstanding threads resolved without the need for cliffhangers. As with the first book, the story could end at this point, as the reader is not left with a demand for more information. However, there is so much unknown about this world that another book would clearly be a possibility.

Game of Thrones meets Shannara Chronicles in this book.

If you like fantasy this is a good one. I read book two first and then went back and read book one to see what I'd missed. I really like to read series books in the order they came out, but occasionally you'll find that reading the first one isn't always necessary for the understanding and enjoyment of the second book. That is the case with this series. The events of book one are referenced throughout this book and give you a good basis of understanding for the series. However, book one does go into greater detail about how Ghost and Gerry meet and eventually fall in love.

In this book, the world building and setting are more descriptive and show more details on the world they live in. The setting and world building have similarities to both Game of Thrones and the Shannara Chronicles. The following is a list of what is similar.

Game of Thrones:
1. Religions: One group believes in eight gods (Similar to GOT's Seven) and the other group believes in one god (similar to the "one true god")
2. Regions: Northers, Souther(ners), Westers, and Easters.

Shannara Chronicles:
1. Ruins of ancient cities and civilizations that died out long ago.
2. Magic and non magic users with healers using sometimes ancient (contemporary) devices.
3. Ancient to them but contemporary to us devices such as a subway train system.

Overall this book is very enjoyable and I liked it well enough to purchase the book one and will look forward to the next book in the series.

Ghost's Dilemma was the amazing continuation of the story of Ghost a witch's apprentice that became a witch in his own right and Gerry the ever loving Alpha and Ghost's mate. This was such a wonderful continuation of Ghost and Gerry's story! To see the sweetness, love, romance and caring that these two share is amazing it truly shows what a true partnership/mate/bond relationship should be! And to see Ghost's strength as he became the Alpha Witch that he is was beautiful! This book is full of adventure, Love, magic, and love and I loved every moment of it!! I Also loved the characters new and of old, especially Egill and I can't wait to learn, more about him and see him develop more as a character!

I received a copy of Ghost’s Dilemma by Morwen Navarre via IndiGo Marketing & Design in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed the first in the Witch’s Apprentice series, but I like Ghost’s Dilemma even more. Ghost is faced with a real challenge to his witch skills and handles it in a mature daring way that proves his strength of character. His trip to find answers to his medical question also provides some answers to his own past. Since I’d been curious about Ghost’s background, this was just what I wanted to read. It’s not a spoiler to say most everything works out well for Ghost, although a new adventure would not go amiss!

I was given this ARC by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this story. Even more than the first. In this one, the village is hit with an epidemic that is killing the old and the young and Ghost must find the cure. Gerry has a choice to make... be Ghost's Alpha or his Mate.

The writing was great. The story was interesting. More characters were introduced in this book and you really got more of a glimpse into the magical world of Ghost's sister witches. A super fun read!

4.5 - 5 stars - Another pleasant surprise ;)

I love finding new authors that have created worlds and characters that keep the pages turning. Ghost's Dilemma was definitely one of those books. I did blunder a little though, because when I picked up this one, I didn't realize that it was the 2nd book in Morwen Navarre's Witch's Apprentice series. I somehow missed Ghost's Sight, but that's okay. It really just added another book to my TBR pile ;)

I've admitted before that sometimes it takes a while for me to wrap my head around Dystopian worlds. For some reason, I didn't really have that problem with Ghost's Dilemma. I also didn't feel lost, even though I'd inadvertently skipped the first book in the series. I do want to go back and read Ghost's Sight though and see where Gerry and Ghost's story began.

There was so much to love about Ghost's Dilemma. I loved the relationship between Gerry and Ghost. I loved both Ghost and Gerry's sense of right, wrong and equality between each other and members of their community. Not everyone around them had that same moral compass. No relationship is perfect though and even though Ghost and Gerry's was stronger than most, they still had a few things to work out. Ghost also has some tough decisions to make and he doesn't have time to waste because it really was a matter of life and death.

The world that Morwen Navarre has created for Witch's Apprentice was interesting. I loved the mix of their present and our present. Confusing, I know, but within the story, it really worked well. There were some interesting twists and turns mixed with some mystery and sweet romance. I can't wait to go back to Ghost's Sight. I also wouldn't mind seeing Ghost and Gerry's story continue.

I received Ghost's Dilemma in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This follows the first book, Ghost's Sight. In this book, you get thrown into the action and a world you know nothing about otherwise. In that way, the first book is almost like a prequel of how they met. If you are have patience, that will be recapped in several passages throughout the book, so it can be read as a standalone.

Ghost is a witch that acts as a doctor to the local village and Gerry is a hunter. Even with having read the first one, the details are sketchy. They live in a type of post apocalyptic world that has evolved into a hunter/gatherer society where they sometimes use old technology that has been salvaged. There is an interesting belief system and loose type of leadership we are not told a lot about. Although short stories/novellas, this is frustrating because it sounds fascinating and the details are not given to us--only enough to tell us the story. I will say this book has more details than the first, like layers of an onion being peeled back, so I hope that continues if there are more in the series. In fact, maybe that is an intriguing writing style to suck you in. I want to know about the godsmen and the other regions. Still, it is enough to picture what their world looks like: what daily life is life, how and what people eat, what they do for work and how they get trade. In a world that seems at times violent and dangerous, Ghost and Gerry are quite sweet and honorable. The love scenes tend to the graphic while still being loving and intimate.

Ghost has a vision from the Seeker, which seems to be a deity, and then there is an outbreak of sickness in the village. He asks other witchsisters for help and tries to find his mentor, Witch who is traveling. Things are not what they seem and Ghost has to seek answers to help stop the sickness. I like the blurring of epic fantasy with science fiction. I have the same complaint of both books: after the buildup of a situation, or the outlines of a villain, things are resolved instantly. While this is not a cliffhanger, it feels like there is some unfinished business so now I await the next one.
