Brantley's July 2016 Minor League Rehab #s (2nd DL Stint)

this is the second part of Michael Brantley's rehab information accumulated during his second DL stint in 2016. it contains Michael's numbers and statistics from his second minor league rehab assignment of the year, spanning between July 11 and 17. if you're looking for a very thorough account of his daily hitting progressions and the details about all his rehab game plate appearances, then please read this in conjunction with my previous blog: Brantley's May - August 2016 DL Stint Updates & Rehab Game Details.

note: if you are wondering why i didn't post Michael's July rehab numbers at the end of July, here's why. initially, i anticipated Michael would be continuing with his rehab assignment sometime in August. and, since it would have occurred while he was on the same DL stint (stemming from May 14), i planned on combining his rehab numbers from both July and August, as i saw no reason to split the July and August numbers. but because Michael recently had surgery and is not going to resume his rehab this season, i can now post his rehab stats from his second DL stint, consisting of games in the month of July only.

like earlier this season, i'm first going to break down Michael's overall July rehab numbers, and then separately break down his stats from
his time with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, Lake County Captains, and Akron RubberDucks. because his rehab assignment took place with three different minor league teams, this post is lengthy.

THERE ARE FOUR SECTIONS OF STATISTICAL BREAKDOWNS IN THIS BLOG. FEEL FREE TO SKIM THROUGH CERTAIN PARTS AND/OR JUST FOCUS ON WHAT YOU MOST WANT TO READ ABOUT.

i'm beginning with how Michael did in his OVERALL July 2016 minor league rehab assignment, combining stats from his appearances with all three teams he played with.

July Minor League Rehab Overview

Michael may have been placed on the DL on May 14, but it took a few months before he got back out onto the field. he began his long awaited rehab assignment on July 11, right when Major League Baseball was starting its All Star Break. Michael played one game with the short-season Single A Mahoning Valley Scrappers, then had a scheduled off day. he next joined the Single A Lake County Captains, playing one game there before getting another scheduled off day. his rehab stint then continued with the Double A Akron RubberDucks, where he played two games over three days (from July 15-17) with a day off in between.

when it came time to resume his rehab and potentially start playing in a back-to-back on July 19, it was revealed that Michael was feeling some discomfort in his right shoulder in the follow-through of his swing. his rehab was consequently put on hold and he was scheduled to have an extensive MRI on July 20 to try and find out exactly what was causing the soreness. unfortunately, we didn't get to hear the update on Michael on that day because the Indians had an early game and the results weren't ready when Terry Francona met with the media prior to the game. then on July 21, the Indians had off, and so we again did not receive any information about Michael.

finally, on July 22, it was announced that Michael had had a hydrodissection procedure the previous day to help break up the scar tissue along his right biceps tendon, which the Indians were hoping was the cause of his pain. he immediately felt relief and soon began hitting off a pitching machine, increasing the volume as he went along. fast forward to August 8, and Michael had been diagnosed with chronic biceps tendinitis. on August 13, news came out that he would not be able to continue his rehab or attempts to rejoin the Tribe because all his doctors decided Michael would need another surgery, effectively ending his 2016 season. he underwent biceps tenodesis on August 15 and is expected to make a full recovery in four months time.

all-in-all, Michael played a mere four rehab games equaling a sum of 13 plate appearances. his July (in-season) minor league rehab concluded with a .250 batting average, as he went just 3-for-12. he hit one double, had no RBI, and left seven men on base. he had two 0-fer games, both occurring while he was playing with the RubberDucks. not only that, but five of the seven outs he hit into in Akron were groundouts, which probably should have been a telling sign that something was not right again with his shoulder. on the contrary, Michael performed much better in his first two games with the Single A teams (Scrappers and Captains), going 3-for-5 combined with his one and only extra base hit. and, if it's any consolation, he had zero strikeouts among all of his rehabilitation games. in addition, Michael bat 2nd and started in left field with each team he played with.

just like in April, i had access to the GameDays and audio for every team. that gave me the ability to get all the usual game details that i normally document for his Major League games.

now let's move on to Michael's rehab with Akron.

July Minor League Rehab with the Akron RubberDucks Overview

Michael's third rehab game took place with his third different minor league team, the Double A Akron RubberDucks, on July 15. once that was completed, it was announced that he would play on July 16 as well, marking his first back-to-back games. however, when the day came, he was a late scratch. the training staff decided it would be best if Michael didn't play consecutive games so soon into his rehab. instead, he played an afternoon game on July 17, the first game of the sort he'd appeared in all year. sadly, it would also be the last game he played of any kind in 2016. he faced the Erie SeaWolves (affiliate of the Detroit Tigers) in both games he played with Akron, batting 2nd and starting in left field.

offensively, Michael couldn't get anything going. he was held hitless in both games, giving him a .000 (0-for-7) batting average with Akron. he mostly hit ground ball outs, though he did get on base twice. once was on a fielder's choice and the other was by way of a fielding error, the latter being the reason he scored a run during his rehab after someone else's homer.

there wasn't a whole lot happening for Michael defensively either. he only played the first seven innings in each game and made a few general catches in left field.

July Minor League Rehab Situational Statistics with the Akron RubberDucks

Michael did not hit in either of the 2 games he played with the Akron RubberDucks and reached base safely in 1 game. he had 2 hitless games, but still reached base in 1 of them. with Akron, Michael bat .000 (0-for-7) against right-handed pitchers and did not face any left-handed pitchers.

Michael bat .000 (0-for-7) with no RBI at home. he did not play any rehab games away from Canal Park. he did not hit safely in either of the 2 home games he played in but safely reached base in 1 of them.

Michael did not have any official at bats with 2 outs in an inning in Akron.

additionally, he bat .000 (0-for-2) with no RBI with runners on base and .000 (0-for-5) with the bases empty. he did not come to bat at all with the bases loaded during his Akron rehab.

if you thought that was the end of Michael's minor league rehab stats, think again. because Michael played in some rehab games already this year back in April, i have also broken down his overall 2016 rehab #s by combining his April rehab with his July rehab. not only that, but his two separate rehab stints this year with the Akron RubberDucks warranted additional re-calculations and breakdowns as well. all of that can be found in this blog:
