Start of the New Term Information
All students, with the exception of Year 11, are expected back in school on Tuesday 5th January as staff have a training day scheduled for Monday 4th January 2016.
All Year 11 students who have Mock Exams on Monday 4th January are expected to sit these exams. Year 11 students may leave school after their scheduled exams.
Happy Holidays
We are coming to the end of Term 2 and are now one third of the way through the academic year – hasn’t it flown by?! I wish all of our students and parents/carers a very happy holiday and best wishes for the New Year.
What a week!
I would like to take this opportunity to formally thank Mr Page and Mrs Adams for two key events that took place this week that were truly special – the Carol Service at Bath Abbey and our Christmas Concert. Mr Page and Mrs Adams clearly worked as a team to produce not one but two tremendous events that have been both inspirational and inclusive to our students – thank you.
Here are a few of my favourite photographs that nicely capture the atmosphere and enormity of both events. There were over 250 girls (and two Sixth Form boys!) on stage at the Concert, which must surely be our best student participation at a concert yet.

Ben Howlett MP Visit
Year 12 Public Services were delighted to welcome Member of Parliament for Bath, Ben Howlett, into their Public Services lesson on Friday 11th December. The 17 students were able to learn about the election process, voting systems and government policies as they prepare for their Level 3 qualification. Lucy Burrell said it was really good to hear all the details involved first hand and be able to ask questions. Ben Pearce enjoyed learning more about current affairs.
Chloe Lintern recently visited The Houses of Parliament as part of The British Youth Council and UK Youth Parliament and participate in the largest ever youth referendum and was able to share her experience of debating topics including the Living Wage, Curriculum for Life, Mental Health and tacking Racism and Religious Discrimination.

BBC Tour
This week, a fantastic opportunity arose for the year 12 Media Studies students to have a guided tour of the set of the new BBC supernatural drama ‘The Living and the Dead’. This exciting new series starring ‘Merlin’ actor Colin Morgan is being partially filmed in the Open Learning Centre of our very own Hayesfield! This gave the Hayesfield girls a chance to discuss set dressing, prop design, location selection and set research with the experts. True to form, the Hayesfield students asked searching questions and listened attentively. We were all amazed to find out that the incredibly detailed set will only be used for 1-2 days of filming! Every day is a school day!

Literacy Tips
(The eleventh in a regular series, in which aspects of English spelling and grammar are explained)
Unclear about how to use the apostrophe? Then read on.
The apostrophe of possession is used to show ownership of one noun by another.
1. If a singular noun owns the object, you add apostrophe and s.
The skateboard belonging to John
John’s skateboard
The sentence of the judge
The judge’s sentence
The phone number of my mother
My mother’s phone number
2 If a plural noun owns the object, you simply put an apostrophe after the final s.
The time of two hours
Two hours’ time
The car belonging to the boys
The boys’ car
The coats of the ladies
The ladies’ coats
3. If the plural does not end in an s, you add apostrophe and s.
The rights of women
Women’s rights
The books belonging to the children
The children’s books
The will of the people
The people’s will
4. The apostrophe was introduced from French in the 16th Century. Conventions of use are changing. If you have a singular noun, which ends in s, such as in a surname, there are two acceptable forms.
The house of Mrs. Jones
Mrs. Jones’s house (or)
Mrs Jones’ house
The teaching of Jesus
Jesus’s teaching (or)
Jesus’ teaching.
The novels of H. G. Wells
H. G. Wells’s novels (or)
H. G. Wells’ novels
Many authorities now prefer the convention of s and apostrophe, as it avoids spluttering, when the word is read aloud.

MP Visit
On the 8th December Hayesfield's Year 12 Government and Politics class welcomed Julian Deverell, UKIP candidate 2015, and Dominic Tristram, Green Party candidate 2015, to the school. Our politics students had devised a series of questions for our guests, on topics such as the First Past the Post electoral system, the EU and equal representation in parliament. It was a fantastic debate, where a variety of viewpoints were scrutinised, and it gave our sixth form students an opportunity to develop their oratory skills and evaluate opposing arguments.
Ms Merriman would like to thank Julian Deverell and Dominic Tristram for giving up their valuable time and being so good humoured!

Carol Service Review
On Monday 14th December 2015 the whole of Hayesfield Girls School, years 7-11, sixth form, staff and guests congregated in Bath Abbey for the biggest even of the year, the Carol Service. This was an excellent opportunity to begin the festive season with readings from everyone from students to the chair of governors to Miss Yates and performances from HOST, HUSH, Windband and soloists ranging in age from year 11 to year 13 even featuring music arranged by the performers themselves. It left guests and students feeling festive and inspired by the music and everyone enjoyed taking part.

Christmas Concert Review
A huge congratulations to all students who took part in the Christmas Concert. It was a fantastic evening that proved so popular the audience had to spill out into the refectory! Harmony, Hush, Host, Windband, Orchestra, Ceilidh Band, String Trio, Saxophone Ensemble, Sixth Form Choir and the Boomwhacker ensemble all performed alongside groups from yr10 and the 6th from as well as other as well as the beautiful opening piece by students from across all age ranges. My personal highlight was the end of the first half when the massed choirs sang a moving performance of God Help the Outcasts. The concert ended with nearly 300 Hayesfield students all performing Shooting Star in a rousing finale. Students have worked long and hard to bring together the variety and quality of music that was heard and should be proud of what they achieved. A wonderful end to the term.

Roller-Skating Drop In Period 6
Early January will see the start of a new roller-skating Period 6 activity on Tuesdays, Brougham Hayes Hall. The idea is to get skaters in school together and see if we want to start a junior roller derby team. It’s open to skaters of all abilities, even if you’ve never skated before all you need is the commitment to learn and the right equipment to protect you when you fall.
What equipment will I need?
You will need to wear the following equipment;quad roller skates
- a helmet
- a gum shield
- wrist guards
- elbow pads
- knee pads
It is possible to get nearly everything second hand when you start out - check out the following link http://www.bathrollerderbygirls.co.uk/buying-kit.html.
There will be some spare kit available for the first couple of sessions, let me know what you’re missing. You will need skates though – they do good second hand skates at the roller disco, Pavilion.
Look out for start date in the next bulletin.

Student Council Meeting
Our School Council had their first full meeting (minus our Year 13 chair unfortunately) last week and got off to a great start. All members are ready to take on their new roles and have already identified three areas they are very keen to promote and develop within the school:
- Developing our outside areas
- Promoting healthy schools
- Further supporting school recycling
Working parties have been formed and are now busily gathering information and research ready to present back in our their first meeting after the Christmas break. These meetings will now be fortnightly so that projects can stay focused and active and all minutes will be published in the school bulletin so that students can see exactly how they are getting on.
The School Council are really focused on using their role and position to the advantage of all students in the school and to reflect their needs and voice. Please remember that any student who has any questions or ideas they wish to present to the School Council should talk with their tutor rep who will then pass this on.
I would like to wish them all the very best of luck and to express my confidence in them as a team. I know that they will make a very positive and noticeable contribution to the Hayesfield experience for all our students.

Family Hockey
On Saturdays at Hayesfield Upper from 9.45 - 10.45am families get together to warm up, socialise and play a game of hockey together. You can be a complete novice and nowhere near as good as your children (like us!) or someone who played a long time ago and would like to keep fit and enjoy some time with your kids. A genuinely friendly and supportive atmosphere for all ages so we can all learn and play and run by parents with kids at Hayesfield. Primary school children can also come if they're playing, currently the age range is 8-73! For more information call Anna (mum to Rosa and Maya Moore) on 07712260370 or just turn up on Saturday 9th Jan at 9.45am. A great way to work off the Christmas pud.
