Beverly Daggett, who became the first woman to serve as president of the Maine Senate, has died, according to U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree.Daggett, of Augusta, died Sunday. She served as Senate president from 2003 through 2004, according to information posted on the Maine Legislature's website. Daggett, a Democrat, was first elected to the State Senate in 1996 after serving five two-year terms in the Maine House of Representatives."Bev was a wonderful colleague and I admired her ability to work across the aisle.  She was key to developing a bipartisan power sharing arrangement when the Senate was evenly divided," Pingree said in a statement Monday morning.Daggett "broke down barriers" and inspired girls and women across Maine, Pingree said.Speaker of the House Mark Eves praised Daggett's "bipartisanship leadership and steadfast service to her community."
