Sometimes, when all lif's lessons have been learned,
And sun and stars forever more have set
The thing which our weak judgment here have spurred,
The things o'er which we grieved with lashes wet,
Will flash before us out of lif's dark night,
As stars shine most in deeper tints? of blue;
And how what seemed reproof was love most true

7/20/2014 15:39:2753FUNERAL TO BE HELD SATURDAY

Alliance relatives and a host of
friends throughout Box Butte county
were greatly shocked yesterday morn-
ing to learn of the sudden death of
John Martin, which occurred at an
early hour at his home at Ravenna.
John Martin was born August 16, 1835,
in Prussie, Germany, and died June
15, 1911, thus being 75 years, nine
months and 29 days of age. Deceased
was a veteran of the civil war, en-
listing in the year 1861 and serving
for three years. He was married
November 26, 1864, to Miss Elizabeth
Talbot of LaPorte, Ind. To this un-
ion five children were born, one son
and four daughters. They are E. M.
Martin of this city, Mrs. George H.
Stevens of Middle Branch, Neb., Mrs.
J. H. Ellis of Havelock, Neb., Mrs.
Pearl Holt of Lincoln, Neb., Hattie
Maude Martin of Ravenna, Neb. De-
ceased came to Nebraska with his
family in the year 1880, locating on a
homestead five and one-half miles
east of where Alliance now stands,
remaining there until a few years
ago, when he moved to this city.
Last fall he moved to Ravenna,
where he has since made his home.
His wife, the faithful companion of
many years, died May 18, 1899. De-
ceased was a quiet, unobtrusive man,
firm in his convictions, and had an
exceptionally large circle of friends
throughout Box butte county. The
Times joins with many friends in ex-
tending sympathy and condolence to
the sorrowing children and other
relatives.
The remains will be brought to
this city tomorrow on the early
morning train. Funeral services will
be in the afternoon at three o'clock
at the Methodist Episcopal church,
interment occurring at Greenwood
cemetery.

7/20/2014 20:18:3267Wheaton --Ellis 6-24-190?

Walter S. Wheaton and Miss Anna L.
Ellis exchanged marital vows at the
home of the bride's mother, Mrs. R. J.
Ellis in the TIMES building Tuesday eve-
ning at eight o'clock, Rev. Dr. Horn of
the M. E. church officiating. The cere-
mony was performed in the presence of
only a few friends and relatives, after
which the party partook of a supper
prepared for the occasion. Mr. Wheaton
is an energetic young man of good hab-
its, employed in the shops at Alliance as
a machinist until several months ago,
when he went to Glendive, Mont., to
accept employment on the Northern
Pacific. The bride was a teacher in the
schools of the county until something
over four years ago, when she accepted a
place in this office. In this work she
took all the interest that could be
expected of a sister, was a faithful and
accurate assistant whose place it will be
difficult to supply. Mr. and Mrs.
Wheaton boarded the night train for a
few days' stay in Lincoln, after which
they will go to Falls City, Nebr., to
remain perhaps a month with his
mother. Mr. Wheaton has the option of
returning to work at Glendive, or may
seek for employment in some more con-
genial climate of the South.

7/20/2014 20:29:5468HOLT-MARTIN. 5-23-1906

Mr. Harvey P. Holt of Lincoln, and
Miss Rose P. Martin of this city were
married yesterday morning at the home
of the bride's father in the presence of
relatives and close friends, Rev. G. C.
Jeffers of the Baptist church officiating.
The groom is a brother of Mrs. H. J.
Ellis and the young lady who has cast
her fortune with the man of her choice
is well known here where she enjoys
the friendship of a wide acquaintance.
She is a sister of Mrs. John Ellis and
Edgar Martin. After the wedding
ceremony the young couple and others
present sat down to a wedding feast
that was all the name implies. Some
rare presents were received by the
young couple. They leave to day for
Wyoming where Mr. Holt has mining
interests and will spend their honey-
moon in the wilds of the mountain fast-
ness, nearest the heart of nature and
with the passing of the summer season
return to Lincoln where their cozy
home awaits them.

" A Pepper-Corn is very small, but seasons every dinner
More than all other condiments although 'tis sprinkled thinner;
Just so a little woman is, if love will let you win her--
There's not a joy in all the world you will not find with in her.
And as within a little rose you find the richest dyes,
And in the little grain of gold much price and value lies,
As from a little balsam much odor doth arise,
So in a little woman, there's a taste of paradise"

7/20/2014 21:26:2482CARD OF THANKS--To the many neigh-
bors and friends whose acts of kindness
were unceasing during the long months
of illness, and finally death, of our wife
and mother we acknowledge a debt of
deepest, lasting gratitude.
JOHN MARTIN AND DAUGHTERS.

7/20/2014 21:28:4983The funeral of Mrs. John Martin,
conducted Saturday by Rev. E. C. Horn,
was considerably interfered with by the
drenching rain, but quite a large number
of friends attended and followed the
remains to Greenwood cemetery not-
withstanding.

7/20/2014 21:48:3484Elizabeth B., the wife of John Martin,
living six miles southeast of Alliance,
found relief from suffering May 18 at
12:30 o'clock a.m. Several months ago
she became afflicted with a cancer, and
all efforts for relief proved unavailing.
Deceased was born in Suffox, England,
November 26, 1847, her maiden name
being Elizabeth B. Talbot. She emigrat-
ed to America in 1858, settling in How-
ard county, Mich. After two years' resi-
dence in that state, she moved to La
Porte county, Ind. Here she united in
marriage to John Martin Nov. 26, 1864.
The year 1880 they moved from Indiana
to Polk county, Nebr., and twelve years
ago became pioneer settlers in Box Butte
county. Six children were born to them:
Edgar M., of this city, the eldest and only
son; Mrs. Geo. Stevens, of Osceola; Mrs.
John H. Ellis, of Alliance; Misses Pearl,
Maude, and Hattie, deceased January 14,
1894. Mrs. Martin leaves a mother, now
aged eighty-four and living in Chicago,
and eight brothers and sisters living.
The funeral services will be conducted at
the M.E. church tomorrow at one
o'clock by Rev. E. C. Horn, and the re-
mains laid to rest in Greenwood ceme-
tery beside her daughter. An acquaint-
ance of fifteen years with the deceased
enables us to testify to the many good
qualities of the deceased as a neighbor,
wife and mother, and sincerely sym-
pathize with the grief of the bereaved
ones. Let the sorrow they feel be light-
ened by the thought that all her suffer-
ings are o'er.

7/20/2014 21:54:1586Dear May
Fair namesake of the month of flowers;
Of verdant? fields and shady bowers;
Of budding trees and gentle showers;
Of Natures re-awakening powers;
Oh may thy life like spring time May,
(Emblem of Joyful youth alway.)
Be far from sorrow care or strife.
Sweet May thy model all thy life.

Our lives are albums written through,
With good or ill, with false or true:
And may God grant that as the Angels turn
The pages of our years.
That "They may smile upon the good,
But blot the ill with tears."

Friend May,
Though many miles apart
Our homes may prove to be,
Yet in the recess of your heart
Keep one kind thought of me.

dies.
To morrow may be
never.

They talk about womans sphere,
As though it had a limit,
There's not a place in earth or heaven,
There's not a task to mankind given,
There's not a blessing or a woe,
There's not a whisper yes or no,
There's not a life, or death, or birth,
That has a feather's weight of worth,
Without a woman in it
