58 | 7/20/2014 15:39:27 | 53 | FUNERAL TO BE HELD SATURDAY Alliance relatives and a host of friends throughout Box Butte county were greatly shocked yesterday morn- ing to learn of the sudden death of John Martin, which occurred at an early hour at his home at Ravenna. John Martin was born August 16, 1835, in Prussie, Germany, and died June 15, 1911, thus being 75 years, nine months and 29 days of age. Deceased was a veteran of the civil war, en- listing in the year 1861 and serving for three years. He was married November 26, 1864, to Miss Elizabeth Talbot of LaPorte, Ind. To this un- ion five children were born, one son and four daughters. They are E. M. Martin of this city, Mrs. George H. Stevens of Middle Branch, Neb., Mrs. J. H. Ellis of Havelock, Neb., Mrs. Pearl Holt of Lincoln, Neb., Hattie Maude Martin of Ravenna, Neb. De- ceased came to Nebraska with his family in the year 1880, locating on a homestead five and one-half miles east of where Alliance now stands, remaining there until a few years ago, when he moved to this city. Last fall he moved to Ravenna, where he has since made his home. His wife, the faithful companion of many years, died May 18, 1899. De- ceased was a quiet, unobtrusive man, firm in his convictions, and had an exceptionally large circle of friends throughout Box butte county. The Times joins with many friends in ex- tending sympathy and condolence to the sorrowing children and other relatives. The remains will be brought to this city tomorrow on the early morning train. Funeral services will be in the afternoon at three o'clock at the Methodist Episcopal church, interment occurring at Greenwood cemetery.

71 | 7/20/2014 20:18:32 | 67 | Wheaton --Ellis 6-24-190? Walter S. Wheaton and Miss Anna L. Ellis exchanged marital vows at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. R. J. Ellis in the TIMES building Tuesday eve- ning at eight o'clock, Rev. Dr. Horn of the M. E. church officiating. The cere- mony was performed in the presence of only a few friends and relatives, after which the party partook of a supper prepared for the occasion. Mr. Wheaton is an energetic young man of good hab- its, employed in the shops at Alliance as a machinist until several months ago, when he went to Glendive, Mont., to accept employment on the Northern Pacific. The bride was a teacher in the schools of the county until something over four years ago, when she accepted a place in this office. In this work she took all the interest that could be expected of a sister, was a faithful and accurate assistant whose place it will be difficult to supply. Mr. and Mrs. Wheaton boarded the night train for a few days' stay in Lincoln, after which they will go to Falls City, Nebr., to remain perhaps a month with his mother. Mr. Wheaton has the option of returning to work at Glendive, or may seek for employment in some more con- genial climate of the South.
72 | 7/20/2014 20:29:54 | 68 | HOLT-MARTIN. 5-23-1906 Mr. Harvey P. Holt of Lincoln, and Miss Rose P. Martin of this city were married yesterday morning at the home of the bride's father in the presence of relatives and close friends, Rev. G. C. Jeffers of the Baptist church officiating. The groom is a brother of Mrs. H. J. Ellis and the young lady who has cast her fortune with the man of her choice is well known here where she enjoys the friendship of a wide acquaintance. She is a sister of Mrs. John Ellis and Edgar Martin. After the wedding ceremony the young couple and others present sat down to a wedding feast that was all the name implies. Some rare presents were received by the young couple. They leave to day for Wyoming where Mr. Holt has mining interests and will spend their honey- moon in the wilds of the mountain fast- ness, nearest the heart of nature and with the passing of the summer season return to Lincoln where their cozy home awaits them.

88 | 7/20/2014 21:48:34 | 84 | Elizabeth B., the wife of John Martin, living six miles southeast of Alliance, found relief from suffering May 18 at 12:30 o'clock a.m. Several months ago she became afflicted with a cancer, and all efforts for relief proved unavailing. Deceased was born in Suffox, England, November 26, 1847, her maiden name being Elizabeth B. Talbot. She emigrat- ed to America in 1858, settling in How- ard county, Mich. After two years' resi- dence in that state, she moved to La Porte county, Ind. Here she united in marriage to John Martin Nov. 26, 1864. The year 1880 they moved from Indiana to Polk county, Nebr., and twelve years ago became pioneer settlers in Box Butte county. Six children were born to them: Edgar M., of this city, the eldest and only son; Mrs. Geo. Stevens, of Osceola; Mrs. John H. Ellis, of Alliance; Misses Pearl, Maude, and Hattie, deceased January 14, 1894. Mrs. Martin leaves a mother, now aged eighty-four and living in Chicago, and eight brothers and sisters living. The funeral services will be conducted at the M.E. church tomorrow at one o'clock by Rev. E. C. Horn, and the re- mains laid to rest in Greenwood ceme- tery beside her daughter. An acquaint- ance of fifteen years with the deceased enables us to testify to the many good qualities of the deceased as a neighbor, wife and mother, and sincerely sym- pathize with the grief of the bereaved ones. Let the sorrow they feel be light- ened by the thought that all her suffer- ings are o'er.
