Open Notebook Scientists Koch Lab NSF Broader Impacts Feedback for CAREER Reviewer #5 The broader impacts of this proposal are very strong and very interesting in that the PI has a very strong commitment to open science, both in research and teaching. In terms of broader impact and integrating research and teaching, this is an ideal situation. ...This is excellent broader impact and the PI should be encouraged in these efforts. CRITERION II: BROADER IMPACTThe lab is running a complete "open science" lab, where all aspects of the scientific endeavor that encompass this proposal are available online in an open model. This novel approach, that covers both the research and teaching components, was universally commended. Reviewer #2 The PI describes an unusual and extremely attractive plan to run the proposed research project as open access, with data made available as soon as it is collected and research notes publically maintained on the open wetware web site. This is a commendable effort and an extremely attractive aspect of the proposal. Based on this alone, but certainly further enhanced by connection of teaching and minority recruitment, thebroader impact of the proposal is outstanding. Reviewer #1 The broader impacts are reasonably strong, particularly the PI's use of open science in all aspects of his work.

Fall 2007: Open Notebook Science for undergraduate course on OWW January 2009(ish): Joined FriendFeed; “met” dozens of amazing people; Students took leap for ONS; Wonderful things continue to happen
8. Response to ONS from colleagues / tenure review For the most part, I don’t think colleagues are noticing Those that notice give positive response; a few have been tempted to try it out (only private wikis so far) Pretty sure it’s a very positive part of my tenure dossier Also should substantially help my letters, I would think, right? Collaborators in cut-throat fields are surprisingly supportive
9. ONS and intellectual property Our IP folks at UNM (stc.unm.edu) are fully willing to work with our lab … no pressure to not do ONS Willing to pursue US-only patent protection (within one year of disclosure) … currently doing this with one project So I guess we’re getting one data point here
