Ann Arbor Public Schools showcased six of their school gardens for a public tour on Sunday.

The tour began around 1 p.m. at King Elementary School and Burns Park Elementary School. It continued to Tappan Middle School and Slauson Middle School at 2 p.m. and Dicken Elementary School and Lawton Elementary School at 3 p.m.

According to AAPS executive director for community services and school wellness Jenna Bacolor, the Ann Arbor Public Schools have been receiving very enthusiastic responses from parents and students.

"School gardens are terrific outdoor learning spaces and a way to keep kids being active and out of doors at the same time," said Bacolor, "It's a win-win-win for schools, parents and kids."

Parent volunteers Sue Ann Bell and Tonya Fox at Burns Park Elementary School are hoping to take the garden to the next level by working with teachers and bring gardening into science classes.

"There's always room for growth." said Fox.

There was a also a group of new graduate students from Student Advocates for Nutrition at the University of Michigan's School of Public Health touring the gardens.

Rachel Bessire and Hollie Kicinski said they were looking for opportunities to help out at the school gardens.

Kininski said, "We can help support the parents helping building the gardens, working with the kids and maintaining the gardens."

Bessire said, "It will be a great volunteer opportunity for the organization (Student Advocates for Nutrition)."
